Has anyone read The Hustler?

for sale!
I found some time back a old,old copy of the Hustler. Let me tell you reading it even after the movie was great. There are quite a few more scenes that really let your imagination run. Like when they went to Louisville, Eddie actually matched up and played some 9 ball. Thats all I'm gonna say, if you've read it you can throw something in.

For the most part, the movie follows the book VERY closely (dialogue included). Louisville is one exception, there aren't many others.

Now TCOM in book form is quite different from its movie. If you haven't, give it a read. I'm not going to spoil any plot, etc. just go read it.

I read it in 1963. My Dad sent me a copy while I was in the Army. It was a good read. Johnnyt

The movie follows the book very closely in the Hustler. The Color of Money was another great Tevis book, but IMHO, just an entertaining movie. Tevis also wrote a great book about a chess champion called the Queens Gambit, if you enjoyed reading The Hustler, it's a lock that The Color of Money and The Queens Gambit will work for you also, Tevis understood something that gamer's understand and can speak to you.

I'm sure that, like me, you found The Quen's Gambit on a search for anything else Tevis wrote. It's a shame he wasn't more prolific.

I really, really loved The Queen's Gambit and I know very little about chess. It may be one of my top 5 favorite books of all time!

I also loved both The Hustler and The Color of Money, which the only think it has in common with the film is the title.

Walter Tevis also wrote The Man Who Fell To Earth, a great sci-fi novel, one of the all time best. And a terrific movie starring David Bowie.

Walter was a professor of English literature at Ohio University for nearly 15 years. Notice the 17 year gap between 1963 and 1980 with nothing published. He was battling severe alcoholism all those years. Too bad, he was a world class writer and a great guy to boot. He used to come to some of the pro tournaments in the 70's and early 80's.

Thanks so much. I did my Tevis reads before the computer and for some reason assumed he had only written the 4 books I read. I'm stoked that there are 3 left to go!

Thanks again

Kevin

That was a great read and a great, although for me, incredibly sad, movie.

I loved the opening of The Color of Money, Fats retired and on a boat, floating, taking pictures of (was it?) flamingos? I want to take pics of flamingos!!!! I'm sure everyone who read the boook would agree it is hands down superior to the movie which was really all about the dump.

I'm trying to find some other GOOD pool books to read while in Chesapeake.

Any suggestions besides the ones already mentioned in this thread?
