Have you ever bought a cue without having tried it?

I would start with a Schmelke

Don't listen to this guy-He would tell a world champion the same thing.
But he is a glue on tip expert.
And Schon cues have been very good playing cues for decades.

Like measureman says, I say that to everybody.
You started a very good thread by the way.
I have 3-older Schon's with 11 Schon shafts, these they are really good playing cues.
You can't go wrong with an STL-4.

In the last 4 years I've probably bought 60 cues. I think I tried 2 of them first.
Get it at a good price and if you don't like it, sell it. Maybe even make a profit.
Great way to figure out what you want in a cue. Took me a LONG time to find the cue that works for my stroke and body type. I chose a Tascarella, but I have to say the old Joss and Schon's are up there.

It's not like I go to a pool room and I can try any brand.
So i have two options:
- buy some very cheap cue which could also be bad for my game.
- buy a good cue online

Well, OK, but I have hit with top-end cues that for me would be unplayable because of the shafts (or until the shafts were replaced).
There are a bunch of physical characteristics of the cue that could go into your decision:

1. length
2. weight
3. amount of squirt (AKA cue ball deflection) in the shaft
4. balance point
5. diameter of the ferrule
6. type of taper
7. wrap

There are other things that some people worry about that I think are less important to the way the stick plays, such as the joint construction, but you may want to think about those as well.

A sneaky pete is a good place to start. I would skip the linen wrap, myself, because for me they tend to slip in dry weather.
