  • No, I'm too proud -- I'll rather eat chalk for breakfast than lay down a game.

Apparently, the last nail in my coffin to Billiards Hell was to lay down a match just to gain some undeserved handicap towards my nemesis (lets call him Rob Blewett) just to beat his ass again. Am I alone in my incendiary activities..?

I'd Lose TWO Games For Pocket Aces

Have you purposely lost a game to gain a handicap?

No, but I purposely lost a game to gain a Wife.
Doug
( it worked and it was my best loss...... EVER ) :)

I lose often but I'll never lose on purpose. The closest I can come is to play recklessly with my nephews. :)

Our league handicap is horrible. Often times when I've won three games in a row and there's no way I can lose, I'll lay down on the last game or else I'd be going into tournament with higher handicaps than all of the best guys in town. I used to win at all costs and I'd go into the tournaments and be spotting the big dogs balls. Eventually I got fed up with that and started doing what everyone else was doing...just play well enough to win so my handicap is manageable. I don't like it, but it has to be done.

yes i have.

now im maxed out in every league so id doesnt matter but back in like 2000
we had 7 apa 7's on our tap team all 4's and 5's and we robbed the sh1t out of towson, md and valley forge, pa.

1 player got caught in vf and was shown the door

I dont lose on purpose ever. But I have purposely took a few weeks off from some handicapped tourneys in the past as to continue to stay at a handicap and not get bumped by winning/placing too many weeks in a row.

BTW: I thought the "Rob Blewitt" reference was funny!

And some of you wonder why pool is where it is......
Did some of you have issues with the Prince of Brunei blatantly paying people to lay down?

Laying down

In reality, isn't this the same as "hustling"..:)

Think about it..

Laying down to increase your chances later in the match/tournament...:D

No, not unless it was Traci Lords or Brittany Spears....

Yes, I have, and I was upset doing so. I joined a league to play and compete, not to show up, spend time and money and lay down. I was a SL2, and could not afford to move up on our team because of other players numbers. Fact is, I couldn't move up even if I tried. I knew very little about the game.

I've been to many money tournaments and city qualifiers, and this is where sand baggers breed. People play as other shooters, they shoot a limited number of games during the regular season, whatever, and show up and blast the competition. I've heard at some national tournaments, you would have to throw the whole room out to get rid of all of the cheaters who show up.

I answered "no", but for me it's not a pride issue like the "no" option suggests, it's an issue of goals. What I want to gain out of my pool league is not so much victory as it is learning, improvement, and fun. I'm not learning much, improving at all, or having much fun when I'm not playing as well as I'm able, so for me there's not really any incentive to lay down. I actually view it as an achievement when I go up a skill level. I'm hoping to go up to a 7 in APA 8ball any time now (I have a very good record as a 6).
