If you have a cloth tape you can measure the circumference of the butt then:

C ÷ 3.14 = dia

There is no industry standard. I make mine 1.275" diameter, at the end of the butt cap. It measures 3.9375 around, if I divide that by 3.14 I get 1.2539808. Why doesn't it come out to 1.275???...JER

I would say the measurement of 3.9375 is wrong because

C ÷ D = Pi

3.9375 ÷ 1.2539808 = 3.14

Hey Raist,

TAD used to make cues with really thin butts. Less than 1.2" at the buttcap. He also makes cues with a more common 1.24" at the buttcap.

I would say that most cuemakers tend to make cues that measure out at about 1.25".

This is considering .840 to .850 at the joint.

I would say that 1.24" is a very comfortable feel. 1.23" if you like a thinner butt and 1.25" if you like a little fatter butt.

We're talking "thinner" butts here. Bushkas need not apply :)

I just measured a lucasi I have here, for repair. It measures 1.285". A Mcdermott I have here measures 1.317". I know that the formula that Jeff posted is correct, but It's too hard to get an accurate measurement, with a cloth tape...JER

Yes, it is hard to get an accurate measuement if the tape is in inches. If you have one that does cm then you can get a closer real figure. You would have to convert but it is way more accurate.

Try wrapping a piece of string or irish linen around the cue and marking the overlap area. Then measure that when its flat. You will obtain a better measurement than when using a cloth tape.

Mine are usually about 1.240 or so, but I have had customers ask for both smaller and larger to fit their own tastes. Therefore, I say hit a ball with it. If it feels fat, it's fat. If it feels thin, it's thin. It all matters what YOU like.
