Help me choose a new cloth? Simonis 860? 760? etc

We have only approved the green and blue.

What colour do you think you are doing?!;)

DOH!!! I knew someone was going to bring it up....my "wife-approved" color is Gold to match the room colors. Personally I wanted the Tournament Blue, but that got shot down real fast.

unfortunately there is zero chance that i can convince her to get the blue. part of the deal of me getting a table was no green or blue felt....it's ok, i got the table and i don't mind the gold color

I am going to step outside of the box and get a little radical. What about velvet? It's so pretty and soft, the balls should really react in a positive manner. I am guessing that if one person does it, thousands of others will follow suit. :D

Yepper, give and take is always in the marriage. At least you got the table, gold is better then nothin. I have 860 on mine and it is plenty fast. I hear the 760 is even faster, I can't imagine anything faster would be like ice. I highly recommend the 860, plus most tables are going to 860 in pool halls. If they don't have 860, they have something pretty close in a different brand. JMHO

The 3rd best

Gold is good. I had it on a Gold Crown before I got my Table back that I have now. It is easy on the eyes and you can see the object ball well.
Any other color besides; light blue, green & gold. I would have to tell you to stand up to the wife..... (Man, would you get a beaten).....LOL

ive had 760 tourny blue and loved it nobody could touch me on my home table , i guess they couldnt adjust :)

ahhhh ha....so basically i opened pandora's box with this question...ok got it :)

seems like the general concensus is a follows:
860 - most popular choice
860HR - the new kid in town that's a bit slicker
760 - either love it or hate!

maybe i will try to find a pool hall in the area and see what they play on to try it out. i think right now i might be leaning for the 860HR.

Yep, Pandora's box is right. The correct answer to this is that everyone has a personal preference and it won't necessarily match yours. Myself, I grew up on 860 in the US then came to Japan and found that they only play on 760. At first it was a tough adjustment, I was a low B level player then, but after 20 years playing on 760, and moved up to the SA class, I've grown more than accustomed to it, or I should say that my stroke has grown accustomed to it. I like the finesse of the 760. Easy strokes, lots of movement. The past year or so has seen a turnaround in pool rooms here and now almost every place you go has 860, or some bastardized version of it. I hate it. I hate having to put more power into my stroke. I've grown a very soft touch over the years and at 41 years old I'm too tired to concern myself about making an adjustment. Also, I primarily play straight pool and slow cloth just isn't appealing for that game, in my opinion that is.

But again, it is entirely up to you. My advice would be to find someplace, or places, that have both and spend a few days on each and see which one you prefer.

SA class is between A class and Pro here. To be recognized as a pro in Japan there actually is a test and you get a license if you pass.

mully, that's pretty interesting about the test and license bit. Can you give us some more details?

PS: I'm with you on the 760. You can move the ball so easily and never have to force stuff. You don't have to rattle out of the pocket every time you pound a ball. You can do those straight shots where you drill it with follow to the top cushion and then bounce back 8 feet. Possible on slower cloth of course, and people will say slower cloth forces you to have a better power stroke... but I love soft touch shots and trickling my shots in. You're never fighting the table.

If the HR is much better why do they make both?Just wondering

There was a lot of discord with rooms complaining of excessive ball marks and durability with standard 860.
While OK for a home table, HR is intended for commercial applications to minimize ball marks altho you still get them - just not as noticeable.
It's slightly faster and finished to be somewhat more durable then regular 860. HR comes in 4 colors and priced the same as 860 or 760.

860

is what I have on my home table,as far as durability why wouldn't you want the best?I wisn I'd known about HR a couple of years ago.My cloth might still look new.

Said the single man...

On the contrary!

That's just good negotiation. I told my wife that the entire house was hers to do with as she pleased, no negotiations, no objections on my part whatsoever, on the condition that the basement was mine, period!

It worked very well that way. On the plus side, I also didn't get dragged into long discussions, window-shopping trips and magazine articles on decorating for the rest of the house either! :D

HR, in its current weave, became available within the last year.

Your post brings up some good questions concerning 860, namely
- how long should cloth last on a home table
- how do you determine when its time to replace the cloth
- are you more concerned with looks or how the cloth plays

Rick, That's how i have been describing it to customers. Their response, Lets see, 860 std is slightly slower and shows more wear then Hr, but both priced the same. UUHHHH, i will go with HR860!! Can you give me a
situation where i should stick with std 860? Thanks!

John

I for

one have the table in a basement so the speed might even out considering humidity.Anyway next time I'll try the HR

When they want a color other then the 4 available in HR or when the HR price goes up :D
Most casual players will do just fine with regular 860.

Keep in mind that the HR blend is similar to 760 so in the long run it should wear out faster then 860.
All 3 show ball marks - just not as noticeable with HR when new.

Lets not forget that 860 is already fast and I think the majority won't be able to tell much speed difference between the 860/860HR.
