Help Needed

I have worked hard for a long time on my game and feel I am a pretty good player. Here lately for some reason I have started miscuing while shooting high English on the cue ball. At one time I only did it while bridging on the rail, but now I do it out in the middle of the table. Last night at league I did it three times in one game, once the cue stick rode up over the top of the cue ball and stopped the cue ball. Am I raising up or what, has anyone else had or seen this affliction before, and can you please suggest a cure.

It sounds like you are droppinmg your shoulder as you follow through. You back arm should not move from the elbow up. By dropping your shoulder during follow through you are lowering the butt end of the cue and raising the tip / ferrule. An easy way to check this is stop after you follow through and see if your cue is remaining level with the table, if your tip is higher than the butt of your cue you are dropping your shoulder.

Hope this helps

Could be your tip is old like jdxprs pointed out..... but I'm tending to agree with manwon, he hit it right in the middle of the ball. If you drop your shoulder, change stance, loose balance/shift weight you can cause your cue to do things it's not supposed to do like RISE UP.

You may be getting some muscle fatigue, or you may be tired and not "finishing" your shot and making sure your stroking the cue like on every other shot. Keep your frame solid and don't let the fact that your hitting the top of the cue ball throw you off..... keep it level and stroke STRAIGHT THROUGH the ball.

I know the feeling

With me it was, and occasionally is, dropping the shoulder. My coach calls it dropping my elbow. Same thing. Butt goes down. Tip goes up.
Here's some magic for off the rail:
1) Of course, don't drop your shoulder
2)The cushion angles down . Use that angle as your guide , not the rail
3) Move your back hand forward around 6 inches( maybe a little more
off the long rail.)

GUARANTEED CURE OR YOUR MONEY BACK! # 3 is the magic. It really works
to reduce or eliminate miscues of the rail.

Thanks everyone, some very good advice. I am going to get on my table today and incorporate your ideas. I went through a faze last year where I did it to many times. I thought that I got out of it until last night. I work to hard on my game to let something like this creep in and mess with it. Thanks again for the help. I will post what I find. I think I will turn on the camcorder and shoot my normal stroke to see if I am dropping my shoulder and then go from there.

set up

I have had this same problem. Mine was caused not by dropping my shoulder, but by actually setting up with the butt of the cue lower then the tip! Rolling on top of the ball is a good clue that this what you have done also.Hope this helps,Jack.

Craig...With a pendulum swing (no elbow drop), your tip finishes level or pointing down (on or near the cloth, regardless of where you aim on the CB)...because that's the way your arm works. The problem for the OP could also be too tight a grip. If you grip tight, even if you don't drop your elbow, the tip will raise up (with an open hand bridge), and potentially miscue.

Hi there ,

Check 3 things with your tip.
1. Has it gotten a little flat. Round it just a little.
2. Are the edges of the tip hanging out a little.
3. After about 3 weeks to a month depending how much you play with it the tips seem to get to dense and hard.

If I start miscueing with a tip I have a hard time trusting it again and find if I'm stubborn or lazy and don't change it I usually pay for it with more miscues.

Put on a new tip and see how easy it is to move the ball around.

What type of tip do you have? They wear differently.

My advice is simple. Change the tip. First move.

I use a triangle right now. It responds good and it's fairly cheap. I whole box for about $40.00. I change my tip about every 2 to 3 weeks for sure.

Some of the pros I know use the triangle and play well with it. They are sponsored by others. That tells you something there.

Merry Christmas.......................................
