Help with search for new cue. Joss?

Hi all.

This is my first post. Very nice forum that you have here. I just recently started playing pool again after pretty much not playing for the last 20 years. My current cue is an older Mali from around 1980, but am looking to upgrade. I haven't had the chance to hit with too many cues but I seem to favor a stiffer hit.

The cues that have really gotten my attention is the Joss JOS207 and the JOS210. Both around the same price, but like the butt better on the 210 and the points better on the 207 (for what it's worth).

Is there any other cues in this price range that I should consider or should I just pull the trigger on one of these since I know I really can't go wrong with either?

Thanks in advance for any input and look forward to becoming a member of your communuty.

Thanks,
Steve

PM Sent. I also have other cues.

I would think you could get allot more cue for the money. If your looking for a cue that plays better or looks better is the question. There is a used Mezz here somewhere for allot less money than the Joss and allot more cue. IMHO

If I didn't already have one that Mezz would be mine.

Playability is the most important, however I also want something attractive. Looking to spend ~$400 or less. I'll search and look the cue you mentioned. Thanks!!

I can tell you I have played a few racks recently with a friend's Joss (made in the 90's) and it does have good solid stiff hit. Since that is what you are looking for, a Joss would seem to fill your need. Schons and Mezz are also well regarded. Don't know about what they offer in the $400 range.

Welcome to the forum and back to the cueing arts. You will find a lot of useful info and helpful people here. Enjoy your stay.

Between the two Joss cues I like the JOS10 much better.I have hit with a lot,not all of production cues and the Joss will hit a little stiffer then most simply because of the shaft taper. So if you like a stiff hit buy a Joss and move on with your game.

1 word, Pechauer. Joss makes a fine cue. But before pulling the trigger give Pechauer a look. Also check out the lower line Jacoby's. Any of the 3 will have a stiffer hit and play very well. Take a look, make you're pick and enjoy. Welcome back.

Someone here offered me a beautiful 1980's Joss that's a bit out of my range, but I may jump on it. This is so darn confusing. So many choices.:confused:

Just to make it even more difficult for you, I would say go look at the Joss website there are more cues there. If you know what you want give Dan a call at Joss and discuss it with him maybe he can come up with something thats not on the books. I recently had them make a 60" cue for me and I could not be happier, it was too my specs exactly, no points, no wrap just two different types of cocobolo. It hits great and is exactly what I wanted and they were great right throughout the process.

Give them a call you can't lose anything by doing that and maybe onto a winner. In fact give a few others a call too, there are a lot of cue makers on here, whats it going to cost you a few moments of your time and a couple of bucks in long distance calls. That might save you a whole lot in the long run.

Joss Cue

Steven,

I have two Joss cues and five shafts (four Joss and one 314) I really love the looks and play of both my cues. One factor for you to consider on your deal is the ready availability of Joss or Joss compatible shafts.

This is not to say that a replacement shaft can't be had for any brand of cue, but simply that there are a ton of 5/16's by 14's out there.

Thanks for the replies so far folks. You make some very good points and have givin me some ideas. I'll make up my mind eventually. Information overload (which in reality isn't a bad thing).

Thanks,
Steve

I went thru the same brain damage myself. The Joss cues have caught your eye. If you buy something else you will always think "What if I bought the Joss?"So buy a Joss and start playing and forget all the others.
Or you could wind up with a closet full of cues.
I have a Lucasi and a Pechauer. The Pechauer plays a little better but the Lucasi looks better. So I play with both. But I play with the Pechauer a little more. I'm just happy I only have two cues.:smash:
One last thing. We have seen these type of posts before. Please let us know what you got and how you like it.
I just noticed you live near Philly. There must be somewhere you can try out some cues.

Joss makes a nice cue--I used to have one myself. One thing to decide first is what shaft thickness you prefer. Most Joss's come with a 13.25 mm tip diameter. That's a bit on the thick side for many players. That factor was what led me to sell my Joss. Yes, you can always have a shaft thinned down, but that's a hassle and an expense that you would probably prefer to avoid.

In your price range I'd recommend Jacoby, as one other poster mentioned, and McDermott. If you search the Sale section here you'll probably come up with some Jacoby's at reasonable prices--they play great.

Also check out the lower line Jacoby's.

FWIW, as you can see in my sig line, I have several Jacoby's. One of them is the lower line of cues called the "Hustler" line. It is a wrapless cue with a flat-faced steel 5/16x14 joint. Although I primarily use a 314-2 shaft with it (because I already had one), the 13mm shaft that came with the cue offers a fairly stiff hit and the price (at the time) was $240 (direct from the Jacoby website). It hits just as good as the expensive D model and the custom that I also have. In fact, if one were to ask me of all my cues if I could only PLAY with one of them which one would it be, I'd pick the $240 Jacoby Hustler hands down. It plays that good.

Another of many options to consider.

Maniac I too have a grey Hustler. I stupidly traded an older Jacoby plain jane with a linen wrap for it. That one had a radial pin in it. It hit like a Mack Truck. I shoulda kept it and had Jacoby refinish it and finish over the wrap.

But as always the new Jacoby plays well. It is in storage now that I have a Josey. But it still is waiting there if I need it.

Welcome to AZB.

Why don't you Call Danny Janes and get him to build you a cue with the points of JOS207 and the butt of the JOS210.

I'm definitely going to try hitting with a Jacoby before I commit to anything. I'm assuming that the cheaper ones play similar to the more expensive ones, just not as fancy.

Joss was my first cue, they are a nice que and if you want to upgrade they are not hard to sell.
