Okay a final recap before I get some much needed rest. Ramil showed his top speed and easily beat Jose 9-5 in the one set finals. He was the class of the field (and my pick) from day one. It's easy to see why he is rated so highly in the Philippines. He is at the top of their second tier, just below the greats like Efren, Django, Alcano, Orcullo, Alex and Van Corteza.
After all these years it's fun for me to watch a great player like Ramil do his thing. Such artistry! And Jose is ageless. He looks the same as he did ten years ago, and plays nearly the same too.
Tang was the most intense and focused I have seen him in years. He is ready to challenge anyone. He played great with his only letdown the final match with Louie. I think he just got a little tired. Meanwhile, it's not surprising that Louie has done so well lately. He has nice smooth effortless game. When he's on (which is most of the time), he is a match for anyone.
Jeff Gregory was impressive too. Now I know why Billy Palmer doesn't win all those tourneys in the Bay area. Jeff has a huge break, and makes very few errors. He has a solid game, that only a top player can overcome.
And Melissa Herndon. Wow, this girl's got game. She's in the fray with the top guns in California and she treats it like just another day at the office. She wasn't flustered by anything or anyone. Her opponents found out quickly they were going to have to beat her, because she wasn't going to beat herself. ALL the guys were shaking their heads in respect for her.
The women's tour has developed a lot of talent over the last few years. The top fifteen or twenty women are serious players. Try having to play Allison, Karen, Gerda, Kelly, Pan, Monica or Ga Young all the time. You'd get good too. Or quit!
Thanks to Jeff Bey for hosting this great regional event and adding a very decent $3,000! He is a terrific supporter of pro pool. Every city should have a Jeff Bey! And a beautiful room like Hollywood Billiards to play in.
Next up for us is July 4th weekend, The Hollywood Jack Memorial One Pocket tourney. Same format, $75 entry fee and $3,000 Added. Should be another good one.
