Hollywood Billiards- The End???

Just drove by HB and it's closed for renovations. Is this the end? That would be too bad. Before the red cloth... nicest pool hall I've ever been in!

I doubt it, Jeff owns the building. Perhaps he sold the building, but I doubt he would in this market, I don't know if he has a mortgage, if he did and lost it to the bank I would be very surprised, he is very consertiave and wouldn't put himself in that spot. But I have seen some strange things happen in this economy. If he is infect closing it's because he might want to retire. It's all speculation. What ever happens I hope Jeff is happy.

From what I had heard, he had essentially leased the business to new owners, but still owns the building. The red cloth was just the first of the makeover the new management planned on rolling out I guess. They probably needed to close for some of the other construction related changes. I get the feeling the place will definitely be more "clubby" after it's done.

If they were about to go out of business, I can't see why the would have gone through the expense of installing the new cloth. But if we see a flood of GC's with red cloth on Craig's list in the near future...

Red cloth.
Next, pink shades?
Sad to see a players' house might be converted to a club.

I don't know. To me HB was a great pool hall back in the day in old location in the basement. Don't get me wrong, I like the place now (or before the red cloth) but I just don't think of it as a "Great" pool hall - not like the old HB or HT.

Agreed. The old location had lots of action. Really good hustlers playing against hollywood stars. Gotta love that. Saw some great straight pool there.

Yes, the old HB is was what I would call a great pool hall. Open all night, at least on the weekends. We would close House of Billiards in Sherman Oaks on a Friday or Saturday night and head to HB for action, playing til 8 in the morning.

Here's what I think is lacking at the current HB (even before the red cloth) that keeps it out of the "great" category: 1) Not open during the day. 2) Mediocre table lighting. 3) Second rate ball sets, dirty balls. 4) Little action. 5) No snooker or 3C. 4) Tables in mediocre condition (remember the cloth on some of the tables at the Swanee?). Jay was repairing rips and holes prior to some matches.

I don't think you need to have snooker or 3C if everything else is right but since it isn't I added that in.

As I said, I like the place. The staff has always been friendly to me, the food is excellent etc. I just don't think it is a GREAT pool hall.

Me neither- Only was there 4-5 times over 3 years-totally unimpressed-Just didnt get it. Except maybe for a night they had a Pacquiao fight-Very impressed with the crowd they drew that night!

When in LA, Manny Pacquiao himself would frequent Hollywood Billiards.

I will defer the official announcement to Corey.
But I was told yes just the other night.

15th Annual Jay Swanson Memorial 9-Ball - 08-26-2010, 04:55 PM

CSI is happy to announce:::::

Just to give a heads up (because I have been asked a few times already) - the 15th Annual Jay Swanson Memorial 9-Ball Tournament will be at HardTimes Billiards in Bellflower.

Feb 12-13, 2011

$3,000 guaranteed added - $4,000 added with a full field.

A full field is 192. We have filled up every year - usually turning away 10-20 each year.

In a week or two, I can post a link to the flyer and the registration. Entry is $80 (including all green fees/registration/and TD fees).

We raised it $5 per person because HardTimes does not have liquor like HollyWood Billiards did.

I really appreciate Eddie (from HardTimes) stepping up to keep the tradition going.

More info coming but this way you can mark your calendar.
