Hollywood Billiards- The End???

Not only is Danny Shades one of the L.A. pool scene's most interesting characters, he is a legend in the L.A. music scene.

Is that how he makes or made a living- in music? There is no way he has a regular day job because he is at the pool hall every moment!

Does he ever play any games besides 1 pocket?

Danny Shades I believe he is semi-retired from the music business but he still is involved in some major events on Friday and Saturday nights, so you won't see him around then.
Nine ball was his game up until 7 or 8 years ago, if the game is right he will still match up in 9 ball or 8 ball. Although no records are kept, he may have one of the all time best winning percentage in action matches and he is always involved in action.

current state of former Hollywood Billiards

I stopped by the former Hollywood Billiards a week ago and the building is being substantially renovated. It is supposed to open under a new name around Sept. 15th. The whole upstairs will be for the club scene. The downstairs will have around 16 pool tables and will still be open for pool. I don't know if Jeff the owner will ever be involved in pool again. My hope is that at some point he will redo the tables with maybe a blue Simonis cloth (which I think would look good in a club) and will have the occasional pool tournament there. It may never happen though because the guys he is working with for the club may have very little or no interest in pool.

Given everything you say I have to ask - why are they leaving 16 tables in downstairs? That's an awful lot of floor space on the main floor dedicated to pool for a management that, as you say, has little or no interest in it.

I guess we'll have to wait to find out what emerges...but the cloth will almost assuredly be red.

If/when they re-open , don't moan about the cloth or number of tables - give thanks that a room re-opened in this economy ! They'll be bucking a national trend !

Thanks for the update Wayne. At least they kept the pool tables. I imagine it will be a considerably different place. If they book live acts upstairs ala House of Blues, it will be difficult to play pool there.

I'll moan. It's not going to be a pool room. It was one of the nicest pool rooms in the country. Of course people are gonna be bummed out. Are you really excited about $8 beers, red cloth and computerized music? I'm not.

How about if they blast "Werewolves of London" every hour on the hour? :grin-square:

What's the latest?

I spoke to Jeff the owner on Friday. Apparently, it will still be a poolhall (although, I'm not sure what kind of poolhall) nad will be called the Spot 5750(5750 Spot?). Jeff mentioned that he is shooting for an Oct. 23, 2010 opening.

Great info Eric - thanks!

Mark it down then guys, October 23rd - Saturday night fever! Put on your platform boots and let's go dancing!

Impossible to play pool here

Each table is illuminated by 2 spot lights suspended in cans about 4 feet above the table. The problem here is that the light from the cans does not reach out to the rails or the pockets of the table. You're basically playing in the dark.

It looks like a great place to watch football or other sports but this can no longer be considered a pool hall.

A ridiculous shame seeing as how this used to be one of the nicest rooms in the country.

On the bright side, my waitress looked (and smelled) like she could be a "dancer" at the Spearmint Rhino or Olympic Gardens if you know what I mean.

Oh lovely. Do they still have the red cloth? Such a shame!
