Home Table - APA or BCA rules?

The General Public has no clue what so ever. And, don't even mention ball in hand.

Don't think you mean the average Joe, cause most do not play at all! If you mean your league shooting buddies or any pool player (pool players in general) then probably BCA with BIH of course. For the rest of the non playing world, BIH is tough and defense is double tough! Not to mention driving a ball to a rail! For non shooters in your home, just shoot em up and have fun. They won't have fun learning your many different strange rules!

Well, not exactly. When I'm playing my wife on our home table, we use APA rules because that's the only league she shoots in and the only rules she's familiar with. Just about all other people that come over we use BCA rules, unless we use APA rules for the very same reason I use them with my wife.

My sweetie and I practice APA rules, but have recently made two alterations...
1) Always open after the break.
2) Push-out on 9-ball.
In my opinion, the lack of push-out is a CRITICAL FLAW of APA 9-ball. Both the push-out option and open-after-break rule FORCE those who might just be there for the fun and drinks to THINK about the game and start to understand the myriad of options they have apart from a 5% makable shot.
Have faith in this game called pool; don't dumb it down. Push-out may immediately benefit the higher-skilled players, but rules like it will keep the newbies learning and intrigued. The rest? Meh. They weren't cut out for the game anyway.

If it's 8 ball generally it is APA rules, because that is the only league game in town and most of my pool shooting friends are APA league players.
9 ball is Tex Express
14:1, Rotation (15ball) 9 ball banks (ideal for a 7' table) are played using standard rules (WPA?)
I really don't care which rule set is used as long as everyone plays by the same rules.

Depends on who's playing...
This was my 'rule of thumb' back when I was single...
If I was playin' with a league player, or someone that knows how to hold/stroke a cue, then we play BCA or similar.
If I was playin' a woman that I was hoping to hook up with later, then she can hit whatever she wants...

When my friend comes over to play, it's gentleman's rules (call pocket, scratches in the kitchen, fouls called but cue stays where it's at, last pocket on the eight, etc.). Safeties are rarely, if ever played as we are just having fun. This is the way we played growing up and is my favorite way to play.
When my brother-inlaw comes over, we play BCA rules. These are more serious games but very fun and rewarding as he is a better player than I.

I have a different opinion of APA 9-ball rules with the "no push-out" in effect. You think the push-out rule would benefit the higher skill-level players while I think not having a push-out benefits the higher skill-level players.
I cannot tell you how many times I've seen a player make a ball on the break and get so totally "hooked" that they end up giving BIH to a SL7, SL8, or SL9, usually resulting in the table being ran out. IOW, the breaker got penalized for making a ball on the break. If the breaker was allowed a push-out, they could at the very least prevented the BIH situation, thus giving themselves a chance of getting back to the table.

Lol, if I was given a penny every time someone called ball-in-hand, "Vegas rules" and then listen to their ignorance of pool for the next two minutes on where they came to that conclusion.
