Honeymooners Pool Scene

Most know the late Jackie Gleason played Minnesota Fats in The Hustler, but some may or may not know how good he played pool. He grew up in New York City and was a "rack boy" in a neighborhood pool room, which is how he developed an affinity for pool.

In this scene of "The Honeymooners," a sitcom from the late '50s, Jackie's character Ralph Kramden is playing a game of pool with his sidekick Ed Norton, a game of call shot. Listen to Ed describe the shot he's going to shoot next ---> Corner Pocket Shot. :grin-square:

Jackie & Ed were classic funny great actors who ned not be propped up with special effects. Their talent was the special effect.

One of the few photos I have on the wall of my home pool room is of Jackie Gleason's from Hustler.
I too didn't know anything about his career in acting, but the old couple I went to have the photo framed knew him although they know nothing about pool. They have a small shop in Athens that does this kind of work but they lived in USA years back.
The photo is this one, I think it epitomizes class of that era's players..

Here's one of my all-time favorite photos of Jackie Gleason and world-renown champion Arnold Palmer. Jackie also liked to play golf. In this photo, he is doing his famous motto, "And away we go." The entire crowd erupted in laughter.

A few folks on AzBilliards who are from New York have stated they did not care for Jackie Gleason personality off camera. My father used to really enjoy Jackie Gleason on TV, and so did I. He just had a way about him that made people laugh.

I bought this photo off eBay. Look at how he put a smile on everybody's face in the crowd. I know a few pool players who have that same effect on a crowd. :wink:

Myself included. And you better call that a "bank shot" if the object ball happened to touch the side of the corner pocket as it was going in. :grin:

Art Carney and "The Great One", Jackie Gleason were simply the best. I have the DVD set and drag it out every once in a while. Great writing and great chemistry. That stuff is over 60 years old and is still funny today. They say Gleason refused to rehearse as he said it ruined the spontaneity. The episodes are filled with brilliant ad libs that only made them funnier! :thumbup:
