Hopkins vs. Chavez at Comets

If Hopkins is gettig within a ball of his old game at one hole, Chavez better play his ass off because AH was as good as it gets until Efren came along.

Anyone with old matches of the late 80's or early 90's of Allen playing understands what I mean.

The match of Allen playing Steve Cook at a Legends of One Pocket event is a great one; Steve plays absolutely perfect the first game or two and Allen even claps (not in a smart ass way) after Steve won the first game brilliantly. Allen goes on to win 5-2 or something even though he was getting over a cold.

AH is a true champ. I think Chavez might have a chance if he's shooting lights out, but even if he loses, it will be a good learning experience for him.

Obviously and for whatever reason, Chavez is playing much better than when he was living in TX a few years ago. That being said and just my personal opinion, I don't think he plays one hole too well. Not his best game. Hopkins is stealing in that game.

Since the game might be evolving from 10 ball to 1 hole, maybe the next progression would be a 3rd game and play a set of each game. I know that many pool rooms in the northeast have 3 cushion tables. Mago's skills at that game should (IMO) even out the advantage Hopkins has at 1hole.
 
I've always heard about pro pool players occasionally matching up at 3-C, but its hard to gauge how good any of them are.

Boston Shorty, Harold Worst, and Mosconi are the ones I've mostly heard about, but I'm curious how well guys like Hopkins, Sigel, Varner, Hall, Grady, etc... can play the game.

For today's players, Marco Marquez, Dave Matlock, and Efren seem to be the names I hear the most.

I'd LOVE to have three cushion be part of the DCC all-round championship since I'm a 3-C player, but a lot of people don't even have access to a pocketless table.

Sigel played 3-C well...I played him a few times in the early or mid eighties. I don't think I ever saw the others you mentioned play. Johnnyt
 
I think they are playing 10 ball tonite at Crown Billiards. I'll go up in 30 minutes and post results later.
 
I guess I didn't get back with you'll in time. But anyway, Chavez won 2 of 3. The last set was 10-8. Must have been pretty good pool.

I think this is great that CHAVEZ is still playing HOPKINS.

Say what you want about Hoppie putting the "mojo" on Chavez but i think that is speculation w/o representation.

Chavez as far as im concerned is testing the water too... He's beaten some of the best out there for the cash (Kiamco,Chohan,Crosby, etc.) and now he's seeing how he does against a living legend.

I just think its great that two guys at their age can match up w/o getting into a BARKFEST! Hopkins is a great guy! When i lived in jersey he would visit us and play some at A.C. Billiards. Always a gentleman and played GREAT.

Chavez has taught me alot and taken me out on mini trips. He's a remarkable player. Always a gentleman and straight up about everything. A great local HERO and someone i've always molded myself after on the table.

Good to see these guys playing MULTIPLE SETS. I think its gonna be a good indicator of who's better. The cream always rises to the top!!
 
I got there in the middle of 2nd set. Chavez won the 1st set 10-2.
2nd set Allen was up and Chavez caught up. Hopkins took it 10-8
3rd set- Chavez shooting good as he did the whole nite. He was up 6-2.
Allen shooting good also and ties at 6-6
Allen running out gets on the 10(which is 1/2 in. off spot, Cue 1/2 diamond below side pocket and 1/2 in off rail) He misses and after safties ensue Chavez takes the game.
They trade games and ties up 8-8. Chavez is playing good safties and they are going back and forth with safties and kicks. Chavez up by one.
Next game I believe Allen misses and scratches on the 2 ball.
Chavez runs to the 6ix and locks Allen in a great safty.
Allen misses and Chavez runs out.
Both played good 2nd set on. Allen missed more and Chavez played very well.
I think if Hopkins did not miss the 10 ball after mounting a great come back, he might have taken the set.

$20 a set is too rich for me, I can go $20 on the match. Like you say we would have to arrange ahead of time. But ... I don't think they will play again, at least not 10 ball. The action is too tough, for both of them. It's time for 1 pocket!;)

Only found out late Monday. Thought you would know. My bad. Alot of people came down. Twizz matched up and lost. Spanky lost. Usual Chicago games etc. A total nite of pool and side bets.
Not much fun you know, you didn't miss much. That's what I tell my wife anyway.
