Straight pool was just about even, but if either had a slight edge, it was Allen.

Rempe was, in my view, stronger at nine ball than Allen.

Hopkins was much stronger at one pocket and other moves-oriented games.

Hopkins was, I believe, the better gambler of the two.

Overall, not much to choose between these two living legends, so I have abstained in this vote.

I voted for Hopkins but they are pretty equal. The fact that Hopkins won more big tournaments is why he got my vote.

Better player?

One more for ya.
Who is the overall better player?

I hate rating pool players (or anything), but I find myself doing it, too.
At the level of players such as AH and JR, the difference is slight. One will be the best one day, the other the next day. And there was an explosion of top level players in the '70s and '80s. Trying to pick the best reminds me of an old friend (a musician) who used to say, "The Beatles are my favorite band, but the Stones are the best!"

One thing is clear to me, however. If you're choosing to imitate someone's style and form, Rempe is your choice over AH every time.

This seems to me to be a fairly accurate appraisal of their speed as players, Hopkins was also a better 10 ball player than Rempe...but not by much.

Both players excelled at table management, a trait many top European players share, unlike most American top players.:sorry:
