How Do the Pros Aim

Well Lou,It's like this.I didn't even, well I still don't know what a pivot Is.No I do not turn my bridge hand or use different length bridges or turn my body this way or that way, or any of that.As soon as he started to show me(we didn't go Into all those things you mentioned) There was know way In the world I was going to change anything about my pool game after oh 30 or 35 years. The only thing we talked about was the part where he was trying to show me how to aim a cut shot. That's when I said, well Stan that's the way I've been aiming my whole life. What I should have said was, well, Stan that's the way I've been "cutting" balls my whole life!!! It could be that's what I said.Man how'ed did I get myself Into this mess?
I have been staying out of this for so long. Thanks for the grillin ole buddy.lol yeah I know..well you shouldn't have opened your mouth In a thread such as this. That's what alot of people are or will be saying.Oh well, they can't eat me.John B.

Hi John!

Actually, I don't think Lou was as much "grilling" you, as he was (and as I was) scratching my head about the seemingly conflicting answers. (That is, one answer says "by feel" and the other says "I've been using Stan's system my whole life.") Not speaking for Lou, but methinks he was just asking for clarification. And a clarification to this from such a player as yourself is very illuminating, to say the least.

-Sean

P.S.: I "think" I know what you're talking about though. I personally use the "eclipse" method of aiming (my personal terminology for "back of ball" aiming). I "see" the shot while still standing up. (And, in fact, sometimes I even "see" it while still in my seat, when I'm about to get up out of my seat to take over the table.) While still standing, I get "on" the line of the shot, make sure I'm fundamentally correct (we're not talking religion here, btw :p ), get down on the shot, and at that point I'm pretty much set. No more thinking about the shot -- just execution to the best of my ability.

Man how'ed did I get myself Into this mess?

Be careful John, there are some critters on this here forum. :D

1. John said that he aims the same way Stan showed him, but he learned it by himself.

2. The way Stan showed him happens to have a name, it's called CTE/Pro-one.

3. The way Stan teaches it, it is called a system.

4. Once you have the system ingrained, you are supposed to move on from the individual steps in the system to your subconscious. Hence, what some would call feel.

5. I actually read what John said, and took him at his word.

6. You, Lou, and others just can't grasp just what CTE is, or how it is supposed to be used, so you both jump up and start beating anyone that dares to use the word CTE just like the little monkeys in another thread.

I'll try and make it simple for you- ever see someone that has had a stroke and lost some use of part of their body? What do they have to do? They go to rehab. There, they are taught the steps to use that limb again. They have to consciously think about moving it, and rewire their brain as much as possible through repetition until it becomes automatic to them again. Once it becomes automatic, they no longer have to consciously think about moving their arm, and the steps to do it, they just do it, they do it by "feel". CTE is the same thing as rehab. Some need it, some don't. Some need it for certain shots that for whatever reason their brain just never locked in on how to make that shot.

Just like with the person in rehab, they are not going to be performing at their best until they can learn to do it automatically. But, in the meantime, during rehab, when they have to think about it, they can still perform better than they could without the rehab.

Correction Neil,I can't remember my exact words,( this was a few years ago) But what I meant or said when talking to Stan at my house about this was that,"that's the way I have been CUTTING balls my whole life"
People,It had nothing to do with pivots and moving my bridge around and all that.John B.

Ok Joey A,Thanks for the heads up.How did this happen? now I'm talking to myself.Oh well,Joey I thought Stan was landon's manager. How do you keep up with all your jobs? Your one of them there multie taskers, uhh? I don't need or use no stinkin systems,Well,I take that back..mine's called PRACTICE and gettin In the fire. haha.John B.

You are THE BEST and I'm not talking about pool. You've got the right attitude John. You make me laugh more than Scotty Townsend. :rotflmao1::rotflmao1::rotflmao1:

I will be sending in my application to be your slot machine stake horse soon.

That's fine John. Personally, I don't care if you use it or not.

lol, oh puleesseeee.

You and Joey were about five minutes from calling Goodyear to put, "JOHN BRUMBACK USES CTE!!!" on the side of the blimp for the Super Bowl.

That's fine John. Personally, I don't care if you use it or not. The only point I was making is that you stated that you used it, and mahnamahna seemed to know that you don't, or that he knows more than you do about how you aim. Incidentally, Pro One doesn't have a bunch of shifting and pivots. It's all done in the head and while you get down on the shot.

You see John, it's just like in another thread on here that made a correlation to monkeys all attacking and not even knowing why they were. It's the same on here with CTE. Just a hint of those three letters, and certain "monkeys" on here will start attacking, even though they don't know why they are. So, don't worry about it, just laugh at the drama on here. Some just can't help themselves.

Ok Neil and thanks for the good words there bud.Yeah I read about the monkeys. That was a good story too.I really didn't state that I use It.When talking to Stan,I was talking about "cutting" balls. No matter what I said, that's what "I" meant. Thanks Neil.John B.

I know its kind of hard to explain with words, but could you give me an example of what you mean? There seems to be some mix up between "aiming" & "cutting". What did Stan show you that you said you have always done?

These threads can get pretty ugly and nobody wants to drag you into the fire.. but its nice to hear a top players perspective even if it doesn't gel with mine.

A top player and good friend of mine told me he was using CTE and I didn't feel the need to use it as ammo or ever really bring it up. To me, it doesnt matter all that much who uses what... its means to an end.

Cleary,
You are and Joe Rogan together would make a great comedy team. I like your sense of humor. :D

(John Cleary is OK, but some of the others are word trappers from way back and they don't all wear those cone caps with the European taper.)

I have nothing at all against CTE/PRO ONE.I'm sure It will help all beginners
and some good to very good players. Now that I got that off my chest,I'll try to get to your question.Sorry bout that.

Hell I don't even know really.I have never been one to use that kind of stuff.Even In golf,I made my own swing. It was something about the edge of the ball to the edge of the ball.THAT WAS WHEN I SAID,Stan I've been hitting or aiming or cutting balls like that, my whole life.Man I'm sorry I can't give you more than that. But that's as far as we got.I didn't want to know how to use It or teach It.It was to complicated for my tastes and I pretty much ended It right there.I just knew that I wasn't smart enough or maybe I just didn't have the patience to take the time to learn It.Once again,I'm sorry I couldn't be more help.Ask me something else maybe I can give ya a clear answer.John B.

John,
After playing as well as you do for as many years as you have played, you don't need to learn any aiming system, not even the ghost ball aiming system; the world's most accurate aiming system even though you can't see the ghost ball. :D

Pssst. John. I'm going to the practice table. (you might thing about that some). ;)

No, I understand. And what you said to him or anyone else means nothing to me. I'm more interested in what you do. Like you just said, "edge of the ball to edge of the ball". Is that something you use or at one point used?

Its just interesting that whatever Stan showed you, sparked some sort of reaction as to what you already do. I don't know if you can explain your process of cutting balls, but it would be interesting.

YES,that's It!!! I remember now.He said something about an edge to edge and I said..well Stan how else Is there to aim?.Yes I aim the edge of the cueball to whatever edge on the ball I want to hit.Thank you for jogging my memory!!! That's how I aim folks.Whatever they want to call it.
I know,wi'll call It the John B. way whooo hooo LOL Thanks again,John B.

Hi John:

That sounds *a lot* like a method I mentioned earlier, which is "eclipse" aiming -- i.e. "how much 'overlap' of the cue ball do I give to the object ball to make it go 'this' angle?" (One would use the edge of the cue ball and the edge of the object ball to determine this, obviously. And it takes lots of practice to commit to memory "how much" does "what angle.")

Unless I'm reading the above post wrong? In any case, I want to let you know that *this* reader of your posts really appreciates your participation in them!
