How do they SPLIT Tournament Pots where you play

This has been kind of bugging me for a couple of weeks, and may not really be a big deal, as I have been in the losers area for a couple of months, but thought I would ask the question any way.

I have been playing this tournament where the total pot is like averaging $150.00/weeks, and the Winner get $100.00, second get 35 Bucks, and 3rd get 15 Bucks.

Does this pay out seem a little top heavy?

it does seem a little top heavy to me! i played in a small 8ball tournament last week about 14 people or so and 1st was $90, 2nd was $65 and 3rd was $30.

Top heavy? Only if you got no shot at the top spot.

I like to see 1st place take it all, except for 2nd place gettin entry fee back.

How many people are in this tourney, or in the tourneys yall uaually play in. That could make a difference. and also whats the entry fee

I played in a tournament once where 3rd got their entry back, 2nd got zero and 1st got it all. I played in a local tourney this past Friday and the winner got $217 and second got $104. Its only top heavy if your not on the top.:D

It does depend on the entry fee and therefor the number of players. but if i were running it with a $10 dollar entry fee it would probably look like - $90, $45, $15.... or give the top three the option to kick in another 20 each, both loosers get to play the winner, if they loose they are out, but if the winner side player looses he gets another shot but has to play the other player before coming back to the one that beat him. kind of like a half way round-robin... does that make sence. i just kinda thought of it on the fly. probably doesn't work out right.

the only problem with top heavy payouts is that they get split alot when it gets to the end and there is no finals. Around here in South Florida, all the tournaments are handicapped, so even if you have a great shortstop playing a B player, alot of times you still see the players cut it up because its a short race and anyone can win. Another reason they get chopped up alot around here is that alot of times the finals goes down around 2-3 am. For the working Joe, hes looking to win his part of the bracket early and then go around and ask the rest of the players in the tournament if they will chop it up so he can go home at 1am.

I personally like playing winner take all, especially if there are not alot of players and the pot is small and the night is young.

I think $95.00, $45.00, and $15.00 would have been a better split.

Did the 3rd place player throw the game to the 2nd place? :D
This is similar to the payouts at a horse race where a show bet pays more than the win bet

I think 60% to the winner, 30% to 2nd and 10% to the 3rd is fair. If you look at some of the payouts in large tournaments 2nd place is about 1/2 of 1st.

There was just a thread on this in the last couple of weeks. Did you do a search before posting?

An average tournament payout is to pay 1/4 of the field. On average, the prize fund is split with each place being paid about 50-60% of the amount the next highest place got paid. For example, 2nd gets 50-60% of what 1st got, 3rd gets 50-60% of what 2nd got, etc.

The amount of the field payed and how the payouts are split varys widely by individual tournament.

OK, no problem. We need to know how many players at what entry fee. Was it regular double elimination? Details are important.

Weekly Tourney Prize $$

The weekly tournament's I ran, 8-ball sunday nights, 9-ball tuesday nights, I always tried to give 3rd alittle something good back , because you have those who get 1st and 2nd quite regular.

With $150.00 purse, this was with $5.00 entry, 16 players max, and the house would makeup the difference to make it $150.00 total, I paid it out like this.....

$75.00
$50.00
$25.00

Saturday night 9-ball was $10.00 entry and a calcutta, so there were more places paid and much more $ involved.
