How do you know where the cueball is going ?

I visualize the entire shot in my head. When I am in the zone, I honestly just think of where I want it to go. Kinda like a feeling or something.

I see the ball. I hit the ball. It goes where I want it to...

How, I'm not quite sure... Which is probably why I have no idea when it doesn't go where I want it to why it didn't :)

Tangent line cb travel.

Then guess. Guess the speed, english, rails, distance traveled.

There is a plan-just not a realistic plan. The 'and then.....?' part is pretty tough to accurately predict for me..especialy since the planning is based on making the object ball...which too often doesn't happen.

Edit: That means I dont know. I guess.

i also visualize the shot and when it comes to whitey i have a good idea of what happens on most shots so i would say experience has alot to do with it

The ghost ball (used for aiming) next to the object ball and my cue stick kinda like a locomotive in the middle of a railroad track that goes to each edge of the ghost ball.

I trace out the path with my cue and let the tip stop right about where I want the ball to go. This is for shots where position is not dead easy. It helps me to get a sense of the speed and spin I want to use.

In Phil Cappelles book "Play your best 8 Ball" he discusses 4 different stages a CB travels after making contact with the OB.

You'll have to bear with me as I might not get the terminology correct but this is what I remember

1) tangent line
2) transition phase (this is where the ball spin changes the CB direction)
3) final direction line
4) rebound line (after the CB has hit the rail)

Once you have the tangent line you can visualize how the spin you are going to put on the CB is going to effect it. From there you can determine the new direction off the tangent line and ultimately the direction the CB takes off the rail.

Buying his book which is I might add available in the AZmarket place would be a good investment.

Hope that helps.

This drill below was shown to me and really has helped. The idea is to place the 2 (any ball will due of course) along the rail where you think the CB will hit based on what you are doing with the CB, IE, using follow, center ball and so on. Stroke the shot and hit the ball on the rail is the object.

One can also use this to see if you can see where the CB goes 2 or 3 rails. Just place littles peices of post-it notes or whatever on top of the rail where you think the CB will hit.

The 2 ball placement is for demo purpose only to get the idea across.

Dead stroke

I visualize the entire shot in my head. When I am in the zone, I honestly just think of where I want it to go. Kinda like a feeling or something.

Exactly, you cannot get to dead stroke by thinking with the conscious mind. Visualization is key.

I see it in imaginary lines like you would in instructional diargrams, or if you turn on the cheat lines in Virtual Pool. Then my brain and arm kinda agree on how to hit the ball to make it follow the lines. This is only on unfamiliar or tricky shots though, on regular patterns I try to let my arm lead me without checking the lines too much aside from deciding which side of the next ball to fall on.

What do you see before you shoot ?

If I have to weave through balls or go multiple rails, I visualize the track the cueball must travel. Then I use the tangent line; or what Dr. Dave calls 30 degree rule; or the diamond systems I am familiar with whatever english is necessary and use experience and feel to do the rest. The diamond systems are approximate because I try not to disturb my rhythm, but are calculated if needed.

So to answer your question directly, the track of the cueball.

I will add that if the cueball is the most important part of a particular shot and the pocketing of the ball is easy, I will look at the cueball last to ensure I am hitting where I intend to.
