How do you lengthen zig zagging banks?

How do you make a ball zig zag bank and continually lengthen after each bank?

Conversely, how do you zig zag bank and make it shorten/come back?

CueTable Help

Thanks,

Thanks for reminding me.

In your diagram Outside English will lengthen this bank and conversely inside will make it come back if you over shoot the pocket. Strange you should ask because most people miss this opportunity me included until someone else does it. I chalk it up to lack of vision. I will dedicate the day to this shot so that it will stay fresh in my mind. Thanks

Inside shortens (tightens a bank) it and even reverses it if you pass the side (2-3 rail comeback bank)... Outside (extends the rebound angle) lengthens it.

But.... Doesn't speed and the angle which the cue ball comes from also affect the rebounds? The harder the hit, the shorter the rebound?

If the CB in my cuetable were further to the right, wouldn't that impart spin on the OB which would shorten the rebound?

If you're asking how to open the angle off the second rail, without tightening the angle off the first rail, the answer is hit it medium to soft without any side english

It's going to shorten off the second rail no matter what you do. In your diagram, to make the shot you need to use a lot of outside and have the 9 barely miss the 10, hitting as close to the upper side pocket as possible, because it is going to shorten from that angle back across toward the intended pocket.

Hit it hard. The first rail (the cushion itself) will put spin on the ball to make it shorten or come back off the second rail. The harder you shoot, the more the rail compresses, the more it "grabs" the OB, the more spin it imparts, the more the OB shortens or even comes back.

Also, contrary to my post above, what 3andstop says will work to an extent. If the OB is rolling and not sliding while it's approaching the second rail, this will lengthen the angle just like hitting a kick shot with follow. You can maximize this effect by hitting the ball softly.

This is your answer here Koolkat. Hit it with just enough speed to get to the pocket.

Just asking a question why would you want to have to depend on so many factor like z banking the ball instead of just doing the obvious

because its arbitraty where the balls are at. Set it up a little differient and its a great one pocket shot. and rep to you poolfire b/c that was funny lol I'm sure he wasn't trying to be mean...every one has a brain fart every now and then

Kat, do you know how to find an aimpoint for z banks?

You can go double the distance from the object pocket and pick a spot on the wall inline with it and the OB....hit it medium speed with outside and itll go in the hole speeds neutral and the spin throws it the desired amount.

The other way is to just line up into the spot that you would hit to make the O.B. one rail and then hit it firm with no english.

If it doesn't pass one of those aim points then its not going to go no ways, unless your twisting it backwards with inside like the 3 rail shot back into the side pocket catching side rail 3 times.

I know its a great one pocket shot and if the balls were set up different but I just wanted my captain obvious cookie for the day!!

oh by all means.....allow me

Basically the OB picks up a little sidespin off the first rail. That sidespin will always shorten it off the second rail except for softer hits where the CB has time to allow some of the sidespin to die. The harder you hit, the worse the shortening will be. No way to get it to keep widening from rail to rail.

In situations where you really need it to widen off that 2nd rail, you can't put any sort of helping english on the CB. Only shoot softly, at the risk of almost not having enough juice to reach the pocket.

For very hard hits, you will see the english it picks up off the first rail REALLY bite... you can actually cause the ball to shorten so much on the 2nd rail it's actually moving backwards, back towards you. It's the basis for a neat zigzag bank shown in one of the beard's videos.

Help a fella out with this. I am having a hard time visualizing this part "You can go double the distance from the object pocket and pick a spot on the wall inline with it and the OB". Can you diagram this? Thanks in advance.
