How Do You Maintain Your Shaft?

I've read all the what " your supposed to do " but I've been doing this since the beginning, never had any kind of problem and my shafts are always smooth.

If it works for you more power to ya brother.

Many moons ago, I used to use one of these....... It worked ok, gave the shaft a different feel.

I wipe my whole cue down after the night is done with a dry microfiber towel. Usually does the job. I'm anal about keeping my ferrule clean. I shoot in league and I swear everyone else has those disgusting chalk blue stained ferrules and it drives me crazy. I could never concentrate on a shot looking at that in my sightline.

The easiest fix for blue stained ferrules is white toothpaste. Dab it on the ferrule, wait a couple minutes, then wipe it off. Makes them look brand new.

I carry a travel toothbrush and toothpaste in my cue case, primarily for long tournaments. I showed this trick to a couple of bangers at the pool hall, I was a rock star for the rest of the night.

Mike Johnson (Jensen Cues) told me that some of the pros that use his cues take the dirt from his yard and rub in into the shafts.

Ernie (Gina) recommends rubbing with baby powder that has talc in it.

I use potting soil. It seals the shaft up very nice. Every once in awhile I will wipe the shaft down with a damp paper towel and its good to go again.

It's simple, use tan or grey chalk, keeps the blue off the cue.

Tap tap tap...... I have never understood the sparkling clean shaft fad, but to each their own. I prefer when the shaft gets that 'seasoned' feel to it.

OK, that's disgusting.

I use Renaissance Wax. Silky smooth and it doesn't allow ANY chalk in the grain.

I know a guy who spins his shafts in a lathe while using baby powder and they come out slick and smooth.

If you turn a banger on to toothpaste and a toothbrush, his dentist will hate your forever for it.

I used to have a way to get my shafts perfectly smooth and new looking
when jackpot here on az was coming to the pool room i would ask him to see how he liked

the way my cue played and hand him the cue

when i got it back it was perfect

this guy could play with a cue for 5 years and it looked better than the day he bought it

now that he is living out of town,i do absolutely nothing until i sell it

then i ask larry vigus to do the stuff he does

it is to hard to maintain a shaft on my own

I should add after vigorously scrubbing my shaft with my green scrubby I use very large amounts of powder, to where my general area looks like Tony Montana's desk.

I stroke it with a Mr. Clean eraser until the magic genie come out.. :ok: Then I wish for world peace, 5 million dollars and to bring back the good Sunday morning cartoons...

Shaft cleaning done on a lathe

I use denatured alcohol and lighter fluid and white paper towel to clean the shaft on the lathe .

To Seal the shaft on the lathe.
I use a blue paper towel soaked in lighter fluid.
I don't spare the lighter fluid and normally I have to apply 6 to 8 coats .

Then I use either Renaissance wax or meguiar's synthetic pure polymer wax .

To achieve this.

Magic Eraser every 5 years. I don't mind a dirty shaft as long as it is not sticky. I never eat while shooting pool that would get shaft sticky.

Unique Products Cue Cleaner and Cue Wax works very well even if you don't have a lathe. Some sealers work best with a high speed lathe and require that extra friction. All you need are a few paper towels with the Unique stuff and apply by hand. I also use a leather belt to hand burnish the tips. I'm not in favor of the coarse scubbers as they leave gouges. Also, the dollar bill trick and the wax paper trick haven't really worked for me too well, and if they did, the shafts would need to be cleaned first regardless.

If you have nothing else around but your cue (say at a pool hall or bar), a lightly damp paper towel followed by a dry paper towel will help clean it up just a bit and smooth it out during play. The best preventative solution is to either wash your hands or wear a glove.
