How Do You Protect A Trailer At Events?

You could always put a couple of pit bulls inside the trailer.

Seriously, get the car alarm installed with the 1-mile range paging function. If someone really wants what you have, they can find a way to steal it.

To recap the proposed suggestions:

Explosive Booby Trap
Psy-Ops
Volunteer watchmen
Park next to biker gang
Take wheels off
Put wheel boot on
Lo-jack sticker (falls under psy-op a little but effective)
Trailer Alarm

For practicality I like the Alarm and taking the wheels off.

For sheer fun I like the Booby Trap and Bullet hole method.

The biker gang approach while effective depending on the group could be like asking the fox to watch your chickens.

I also like Lenny's live stream idea preferably with a remote Taser attached to the trailer so that Beav 99 could drop the ban hammer on a thief....literally.

Keep 'em comin.

The coupler lock and the wheel lock ideas are the nuts.

Then you have to protect the door that will be tough as most bad guys have a bolt cutters and a master type lock is easy pickings.

Have your door made with built in locks where the hasp is not available would be the solution for that. You see that on some job boxes on construction sites. I do not know how they work but it is a master lock but you can only see the bottom where the key goes, the hasp is tucked up inside the box and not accessible.

People - Don't mess with the TARs stuff

Put some foam around Justin Bergman's mouth and let him sit outside of the trailer........who would F&*^ with that???

Take a wheel off and put it inside the trailer. Put one of those huge coupler locks to top it off. If someone fades that without getting caught, they earned the contents.

How about those wheel locks that you see on cars that are abandoned or for other reasons. I think they are put on by the police.

They actually make a version of that device (called a "boot") just for trailers. See trailerlock.com for more info. This might be the most effective security device for a trailer, since it's very easy to circumvent a hitch lock by simply tying on (the old duct-tape and bailing wire solution) and dragging the trailer somewhere nearby for unloading.

Removing the wheels is not a bad idea, but it probably doesn't buy you much. Trailer wheels are not expensive, and if you were in the business of steeling trailers you'd probably carry spares along with lug nuts.

Good rolls,

Aaron

What's up Justin, the best thing i can recommend to you is those huge padlocks that are round for the back doors, or any door. uh...i think www.truckingusa.com has them. but if not send me a pm, and i'll tell you the exact place where i got them for my fleet of F-150's and Vans. I used to be a hell of a thief, and i'm telling you, these specific one's i'm tlaking about is virtually impossible to break into, unless your running around with a saws-all ready to cut out the side of the trailer. Also if it's un-hitched, chocked wheel thingys can be made secure with a master lock and steel chain threw them securily to the wheel.

All great ideas guys. Thank you but I think I have found the mother of all theft prevention tactics. It is a simple sticker that would be affixed in a noticeable spot. It would cause any prospective thief's heart to stop cold with fear and dread........

In all seriousness. Thanks for the ideas. We hope to move up to a trailer for our stuff soon and I want to make sure we do all we can to protect it. Some great suggestions here. Thanks.

DING DING DING DING!!! We have a winner. That may be the most frightening pic i've ever seen in my life.

My trailer only has one door on the rear (no side door) so I just back up to a wall or a light pole.

Can't open the door and makes it real hard to turn the trailer and get it past the rear of the truck.

....kinds of reminds me of Bill Murray in Caddyshack.... when he blows up the course with C-4 to kill the gopher (Easy-e making little pool balls, cue sticks, etc with the C-4).

I can see an entire parking lot with all this gray puddy duct-taped to the lamp posts, trailers, neighboring cars, man-hole covers, drainage grates, trees and other nearby things with all of this skinny wire terminating behind a tree stump.

I don't know what kind of signs or decals you have on your trailer. But, another option is just to have a sign made up for a lawn care company, and then stating that this is the manure wagon. You could easily just screw it over your existing sign. Then no one would break into it unless they really wanted your crap!

I was thinking an "Action Salvage" sign (or better, cheap spray painted stencil look), But their trailer is in shiny condition.

I still like "Action Salvage" for TAR though.
