Toby Sweet and does anyone have stories

Search the Hippie in forums. I did a search due to stories from some old pool players in Ga. I searched until I found some of them still living that traveled and/or knew Toby in the 70's. They verified that Toby Sweet was this legend. I believe you will enjoy the story and the journey as I did.

Back in the 70's Toby busted Boston Joey at 711. I think later Joey beat him when "Young" Chris, his backer came to the poolhall. But guys like George Mikula said he was a monster player capable of beating anybody.

Does anyone remember WaWa a very good spanish palyer and how well he played?

smooth

I have an Accu-Stats video of Toby Sweet in a pro tournament match.....the only time I have seen him play.......He had a very smooth and sweet stroke.....in the Buddy Hall style.......
There's one I've seen of Toby vs Mizerak and another vs Wade Crane, both in the 90s. Smooth is right. He just knows how to use the natural path of the cue ball and speed control to get position. Very rarely does he have difficult shots, very efficient.

Watched it yesterday. 😃😀

Great match, good watch anytime!

That’s the reason I dug up this thread, great memories.

Thanks for the thread resurrection, awesome match. Especially with a little D.West vs J.Ervolino in the background.

We used to play back then and he was really a shadow of himself in the 90s.
Rarely practiced and went long periods of time not playing at all. It's actually a tribute to his style of play.
Not pick up a cue for months yet it took a top player to beat him regardless.
Mark Tadd could do that as well, not play for months and in a week or less be tip top form. That’s a super rare player that can do that.

I watched the Wade Crain match the other day. First thing I said “looks like buddy’s CB”. Then I decided to read some old threads, pretty good one here. I saw what the others did, his CB is just so nice. Wow. No flash, just BiH shape over and over.

I really like this match, will watch it lots more times. For some reason I don’t recall seeing him play before. I knew he was super strong and about his bell bottoms. But I don’t recall seeing him play

I was told Billy I quit him after losing straight sets just one or two times and would never play him again.

the most recent accu stats video on YT features Sweet

did anybody else find it funny that after all the talk about how gentlemanly the both were that the match came down to a cheap ball in hand on not calling the push shot at 10-7? (Edited: it was 7-7)

sure, it’s in the rules, and it makes sense; but wade got up and looked at the table first to see if he liked it before asking toby whether he called that push or not.

it was very obviously a push, and it felt like a hollow way to steal the game, to me. i mean its not that hard to say “push” but its also not that hard to not be a dick about it.

Yeah, I did see all that. But my take on it was the opposite, I agreed with commentators Grady & Buddy - to me Toby’s “push” confusingly almost looked like a kick shot at the 1b and he didn’t call a push. He had also played safe on 1-2 earlier 1b shots vs pushing out, so it was a of an odd mystery what was going on. I didn’t get the impression Wade waited or looked at it, seemed like he & the refs handled it properly. Both players seemed very gentlemanly throughout other calls and the match in general, and I thought it was actually an odd move by Toby on that one.

Another funky thing to see, was Wade bumping an object ball rather egregiously with his bridge hand when shooting a shot in the 6th rack. He paused and checked with ref and I guess it was a CB fouls only rule set, but it looked like a bar scene and by today’s more common all ball fouls, was both weird & refreshing to see.

I’ve only heard stories about these two guys, never saw any video of either one of them playing before. Silky smooth pool, by any measure!

as i recall the cue ball was so wedged in between the 6 and cushion that a kick at the 1 wasnt even possible. i assume thats why toby failed to call his pushout.

Yeah, agreed. From player perspective it may have seemed that way to Toby. But from camera/announcer perspective the soft two rail kick seemed like an option, and he shot it in that general direction so it was a bit confusing.

That was a strange shot- I think it was actually tied at 7 at that juncture of the match. I think Sweet clearly intended that to be a push and should have called it. Don't know what I would have done in Crane's position- felt a little cheap, but it seemed like Buddy thought he was fully justified in calling a foul.

Sadly, I noticed at the 1:04:55 mark that Grady prophesied his own death from cigarette smoking

playing in a tournament you do use all the rules to your advantage. that is what the rules are for.

by the outcome you could surmise he was pushing out but certainly not when he was lining up or shooting it.
he knew the rules but forgot and messed up and it cost him the set.
