Young and old players that have just started out trying to learn to be a good player? Show them shots, explain things at the table to them, Show them how to stand, how to stroke their cue, Give them tips to better their game, and take time to practice with them? Thanks.
Many Regards,
Lock N Load.

The only advice I give is teaching them basic fundamentals.

I don't really want to give people advice because you don't know if someone likes it or not.

Sometimes and that's if I am in a tournament I will give advice to my opponent after his turn. It gets into their head. Sometimes I will try to give a lesson within a match. Not deliberately sharking him but I am doing it with subtlety.

When I started college in the early 90's, we had a game room with several tables. Nobody there knew anything about shooting pool, but they played because it was something to do between classes. I started teaching them how to shoot from the first day I arrived and everyday I was able to until I was able to play them without making them feel like idiots. It's no fun to me to play someone who has zero chance of winning. I'm working with someone right now every other week, and I enjoy seeing her improve. So when someone shows a genuine interest in becoming a better player, I'll happily point them in the right direction. Noone started out knowing everything, and I learn something new everyday.

Too many to remember the numbers of them!!! Suffice to say it's been a sh*tload of 'em.

Maniac (likes sharing knowledge to those wanting/willing to learn)

I'm always watching the bangers for someone with some semblance of aptitude for the game. I've done the same for the last 40 years with woodworkers.
I'm approaching the age of the guy who did the same for me.

I don't push it but offer and continue if not rejected.

I talk a hell of a lot better game than I shoot:grin:

I used to offer help.. but all I ever got was indignant disinterest..

now I only offer advice if asked

Same as Dom_papa, I try to limit my advice to players who need to work on the fundamentals. I am careful to make sure the individual is open to advice (not everyone appreciates it).

Times have changed I guess, back when I was a kid, (walking to school uphill both ways barefoot in the snow) they put some gold crowns in the local bowling alley. Kid magnets!!
We started banging the balls around, Some of us watched the old guys, (yeah the tables were old guy magnets too:grin:)
the old guys saw who was watching and started helping. I learned to play the game for table time and a $1 call shot, ball to pocket, lineup. He played 10 ball no count and he showed me everything I was ready to learn.
I think I owe that to someone . . .

so I keep looking . . .

I own a room in Lakewood, Washington and I work with some my APA teams, and a number of customers, sometimes I do nothing else so if anyone is expecting a cue built any time some that is why it is late!!!:D

Actually I work with different customers almost every day both young and old. This is truly my favorite time of the day, I actually wish I could devote more time to it alone, but the repair and cue building business is booming.

This is a great thread, the only way pool will survive is if people spark interest in the young.

This statement is probably indicative of most of the members of AZB.

Maniac (definitely me)

Thats me, hell I will take a spot playing One Pocket, 3-Cushion, or 14-1 from anyone, thats how bad my game is these days!!:D

Craig,
Can't wait to get back to the NW and visit you. Only spot you will get from me is my two hour drive South form Ballard to you:grin:

and that is before we even up my shitty stroke with your room owner game . . .:grin:

I don't have the patience to help a really raw player-so be it.
I do try to help the guys that can run a rack of 9 ball to refine their game.
Sometimes they listen and sometimes they don't. Can't really figure out if they want to learn or not. Some times I wonder if I should bother at all. And just for the record I am a much better player then they are.

With the kids, I just watch them to judge their natural ability. I also watch to see if they are watching the better players in the room. At this point I approach them and offer assistance whenever they are ready for it. If they ask at that point they truly want to learn and I will teach them as much as they are able to absorb. I have kids who can't afford to pay time who love the game, however, if I see that spark in their eye I can always find something for them to do to earn the table time or a meal. I was taught very young that people appreciate things much more when they earn something, rather than getting it for free, I wish our Government could understand this simple fact!!:(

I have had some truly great young players come through these doors over the nine years since I opened my room, and I hope I have helped some of them along the way, I mean what else can any of us do!

Manwon,
You said a mouthful when you talk about the young kids and people that want to learn to be better players. Thanks for your posts. And how you try to help them improve their game. And earn it.

Last night I tried to teach a drill to a league player how to learn exactly how much spin they're puttin on the CB. His comment, "boy I wish I knew that." For crying out loud mister, I just told you. Waist of breath.

I noticed everytime I tried to give advice people seem pissed. They feel like is an insult to their abilities.

Same thing I seem to get a lot.
Maybe my style of giving advice is wrong.
when i play with the guys for fun and they seem to be stuck on how to get position i ask "Are you stuck?" They say no and screw it up anyway.
They had no clue but did not know that they had no clue!

I agree.
Sometimes you are just better off not trying.
