With the kids, I just watch them to judge their natural ability. I also watch to see if they are watching the better players in the room. At this point I approach them and offer assistance whenever they are ready for it. If they ask at that point they truly want to learn and I will teach them as much as they are able to absorb. I have kids who can't afford to pay time who love the game, however, if I see that spark in their eye I can always find something for them to do to earn the table time or a meal. I was taught very young that people appreciate things much more when they earn something, rather than getting it for free, I wish our Government could understand this simple fact!!
I have had some truly great young players come through these doors over the nine years since I opened my room, and I hope I have helped some of them along the way, I mean what else can any of us do!
