How much different are they?

My question is how much difference does a set of cheap balls compared to a set of Aramith balls make? And what is so different between the standard, premier, pro, and super pro Aramith balls? Im playing with a set of Spaldings now but was thinking of buying a new set if it would make a difference.

there is a huge difference, cheap balls suck!!!!! and considering the time they last and the difference in cost it makes zero sence to buy cheap balls!!!

just remember.. there's a reason why they are CHEAP!

With pool balls you want consistancy: weight, roundess, density, and elasticity... makes all the difference. Not to mention you could probably go through 2 or 3 sets of cheap balls by the time 1 set of aramiths even start to look broke in. JMO

Cheap balls

Cheap balls is like sex with a condom. Like bad pizza there is no bad pool but why would you unless you had to.

1. The Aramith balls are the only one in the world made of pure phenolic resin, making them last up to 5 times longer than other balls made from polyester or other polymers.
2. Thanks to their exceptional playing characteristics, the Aramith balls are used in virtually all tournaments worldwide.
3. The extra hard vitrified phenolic surface of the Aramith balls reduces drastically wear and burn spots on both balls and cloth, guaranteeing the lowest cost over time.

The big difference

The big difference, the one that matters, is in the hit. It isn't nearly as effective practicing to go play in a hall with good balls if you are using cheap balls at home. I know nothing about the Spalding balls but if they are the cheap balls the play is enough different to cause you to miss shots and shape when you swap over to good balls.

The major differences in Aramith ball sets are the resin quality, tolerances, precision and finish.
In order of quality you have Super Pro (best), Premiums, Premiers and Standards.
Play with a set and you won't want to use anything else.

Cheapo polyester balls are prone to pitting and chipping, have wider differences in weight/balance/size
and the finish wears off rather quickly. You get what you pay for in a ball set.

Best way to compare the diffrences in cheap balls vs aramith is goto a pool hall look at the balls they give you and see how nice they look even with all the use that set gets (if they are using aramith balls of course). Then goto a bar put 4 quarters into a table and look at the balls that come out and how crappy they look with all the use they get. Now what balls would you want to buy :)

HEY guys thanks for the input, I kinda figured it was a stupid question but with me being a weekend player I didnt know if I would be able to see the difference.Reckon its time to add a set to my Christmas list.HO,HO,HO!!

I bought a set of Premiums w/a red circle cue ball from a billiards store going out of business for $50 a couple of years ago. Before those, I had an old set (still good balls, but old), and the action/english you could use for shots was TOTALLY different between the two. I'm sure cheap balls would be even worse than my old set...Not sure what the Premiums go for $$, but if you can get a set from half the price of the Super Pros; do it!!

The bar I play at the most has 2 Diamond bar boxes, and the balls are Aramiths (and the cue ball is a red circle). :p

I do know the boxes you speak of though (I did play in leagues at one time), and I try to avoid those like the plague....

I'd just had a run at this my self, deciding for Aramith or Brunswick:

There is a big difference even in between the Aramith SuperPro and the SuperPro TV set!
Both sets are used in two different pool halls and the TV set feels heavier and harder to get english with than the SuperPro which feels like "toys" compared. I'm pretty sure the TV set is also bigger in diameter but that I have to measure to be 100% sure.

So going for some cheap balls - if you have a good table - could put you in a strange spot when you enter a tourney where they use a TV set or similar.

I did go for the Centennial, but then that's just me.

The Super Pro and TV Super Pro sets are the same size - 2.25"

I did measure our Premium set and compared these to the Pro TV set and they where for sure not the same. However it should be mentioned that our Premium set was used for many years so this could be a adding factor.

The reason for my statement was that this was my feeling when we received our new Pro set (not the TV set) which felt lighter than the others (TV set) when playing. I'll do the measurements and post a update.

The difference between the Aramith Super Pro and the SuperPro TV set is that for the TV set, the balls are colored differently so that the balls are easier to distinguish on tv.

At the link below, you can see the difference in ball colors for the tv set: http://www.saluc.com/html/billiard/index.php?idlien=10

If the super pro are the best (what I have) then why are the centenials (different manufacturer) so much more expensive? The centenials are over $225, and the super pros run around $155.

What is the difference in ball?
