How to RADIATE CLASS at a pool tournament.....

Last night I went to a pool tournament and a new comer was signing up for the handicapped 9 ball event. I didn't recognize him nor did anyone else.

They asked his name and he told them and they told him it was a handicapped tournament with AA being the highest, then A, then B. AA plays A 3-2, AA plays B 3-1 on the winner's side. A plays B 3-2.

The guy says, "I'm on vacation, it doesn't make any difference to me, put me as a AA." I immediately complimented the guy for showing such class as we all know most pool players are going to try to sneak in under the radar and beg for the lowest handicap. The guy had a girl with him and he didn't look like your typical pool player, clean-cut, well-dressed, nice looking with a VERY ATTRACTIVE CLASSY LOOKING girl with him.

So as the tournament finally gets underway, they call JoeyA and this fellow to the table and I was sitting in my chair watching the guy play and I figured that he wouldn't be much trouble for me to beat and then I see him making nice outs (playing 8 ball), choosing good patterns and such. I heard his name called but it didn't register with me at the time. Normally, I don't concern myself with how anyone plays but this guy exhibited such class, I was want to observe and learn more about him. Anyway, it could be that my game was a little off because I sold my Performance Cue (my playing cue for the last few months) the night before and was playing with a new/old cue for the first time, or possibly because my mind was on this guy doing a fine job on running out or maybe I just wasn't in the mood to win. Regardless, he stayed up the pressure winning the first game, then the second. I managed to win the third game and we both needed one game each for the win and he made a nice out on the final game to win the match and I asked, "Are you from New York?" and he replied that he was. I said "I thought so." He said, "You must have a really good memory." and I replied, "I'm JoeyA from AZ Billiards." We both began to laugh and had a great time talking about New Orleans, AZB, pool and serendipity. Jude Rosenstock introduced me to his lovely wife and we chatted for what seemed like far too long because they were holding up the tournament for us but eventually, I got knocked out of the tournament and Jude was still hard at work. He went hill-hill with Richie Richeson and I made sure to tell his wife who Richie was and what was coming down tomorrow night. Richie edged Jude out by a small margin and we'll have to wait and hear the rest of the story from him because I headed on out with my son and I went to Buffalo Billiards in Metairie to watch Scott Frost playing $500 a game one pocket with one of our locals, giving up huge weight and holding his own.

It's a small world out there and you never know who you're going to meet.

Jude, it was my pleasure meeting you and your wife. You make me want to be a better man and a better pool player. If you get away to play at Buffalo Billiards any time during your remaining stay, I will be waiting for a rematch and perhaps we can share a Muffaletta @ Giorlando's Restaurant. :grin:

Yes, Jude is a nice guy. I got to meet him on a trip to Amsterdam Billiards in NYC after arranging it through AZ Billiards. We played a few racks there after his league. It's good to hear about these AZB encounters!

Joey, thanks for this post! Running into you is easily the highlight of the trip for us! So far, we're just overwhelmed with NOLA food, charm and hospitality. So much so, we feel a need to experience as much as possible before we go. We are going to try and make it down there tomorrow or Thursday to catch the action since it promises to be a great show but there's a chance we'll be getting drunk and fat somewhere.

I will say one thing, nobody should ever forget NOLA when it comes to pool. Lacy's Cue is easily the best room I've ever seen in my life and that's saying something and, New Orleaners keep telling me I have to see Buffalo's too! I'm sorta retired from action but plenty of the regulars made it clear they'll be happy to oblige should I find myself itching to fire off a few barrels. It feels like 1990 all over again.

I'm leaving Friday and as much as my wife and I are looking forward to seeing the dogs again and tending to our daily chores, we'll miss this place just as much. I had a ton of fun playing in the tournament. My only regret was letting Richie Rich escape but he's the kind of talent that can make that happen.
 
Nice post, made me think of allot the great players, Liscotti, Rempe, Cole Dixon and pretty much all the top players from that era dressed very nicely, especially for match play.
 
Great post for sure. Class is something that pool has needed for a long time. It has got to be so bad I don't really enjoy being around it much anymore. Everyone trying to steel or argue with someone over a dollar. To bad we don't have clinics to teach class. Thanks for sharing Joey
 
I usually have a 32 gun, a pocket full of fun and a razor in my shoe. I also have a diamond ring that I wave under every bodies nose.

Cool story Bro. It would have been a pleasure and a surprise to meet Jude under those circumstances. He is always classy on AZ so it shouldn't surprise anyone that he takes that with him in his travels.

Does he carry a razor in his shoe too?

Jude buddy, you gotta get out more. Lacy's is very nice, but the hands down best room in the country is Mike Page's room, up in Fargo ND. :thumbup:

Scott, could you compare it to Romines in Milwaukee???
 
No comparison at all Bill. Go to Fargo Billiards website, and see for yourself. Again, taking nothing away from Romines (been there several times, and it's a nice room), Fargo Billiards is the standard by which all pool rooms should be judged, imo. Superior equipment, superior amenities, superb food (chef on staff), incredible layout (58 tables, private rooms, pro shop, private instruction area, etc.), amazing music and video system, very friendly and attentive employees, and top it off with Mike's and Rory's management skills. For anyone who wants to see how a GREAT poolroom is set up and run, stop by Fargo Billiards, Fargo ND.

Just to add, I've been to most of the nicer pool rooms around the USA, and while they are great, Fargo Billiards wins hands down.
