How to value a cue that's no longer made? [UPDATED]

I purchased a cue from Gracie Cues in 2007 and was curious how to determine a value for resale? From what I can gather, Gracie Cues is no longer making cues, as they were made by Gracie's father, and this was 10 years ago. Gracie Cues seemed to be one of a few "popular" Philippine cue makers in the early 2000's, but there is not a lot cues floating around in 2017 to compare it against.

Any thoughts on how to determine a fair price value for the cue? As I said, this was purchased in 2007, still straight and shoots great.

** I've posted the cue for sale here on the forums. I tried to price it reasonable to move it, please feel free to PM me with any offers or questions **

True worth is the price someone is willing to pay for it, so the recommended method allows the most opportunity.

It's not an extremely well known maker, though that does not mean it isn't well built.

The fact that you have a cue that is no longer made is of little consequence.

Is the cue in question a standard model from a catalog or custom ordered?

Was the cue made by a very well respected or highly regarded cue-maker?

The mere fact that the company went out of business is insignificant and that
has happened to a lot of cue -makers & firms without adding any value to a cue.

That cue isn't listed in the Blue Book of Pool Cues..... At least I couldn't find it...

Which means it is worth about two thirds of half the value you think it is worth.

Rule of thumb is 50% of discounted retail.

That is it no longer made may or may not be of much consequence. It all depends on demand.

Do you think there is much demand for this cue?

Generally speaking, unless it is something "special" (BB, Tasc, SW, Etc) the negotiations start around 50% of new.

There are always exceptions. I have PI made cues that I bought around the same time as you bought yours that I know I can actually get more than what I paid.

You sure they're ivory ferrule, joints and butt plate?

royce gracie cue??? - 06-18-2006, 07:56 AM

i know a cue maker in the philippines named gracie diaz. he actually makes a pretty decent custom cue all by hand. i purchased 10 of his cues last year and sold 7 to customers in my local pool hall. people havent complained about the cue and i myself have shot with one and they play well. i always told people why spend $400+ for a manufactured cue when you can get a custom cue for that price or less. he has listed his cues on ebay before and i believe for the money you cant beat it. a custom cue with 2 shafts for $150-$350. in the industry today its pretty good.

At the time of purchase in 2007, yes. Tt was shipped via EMS, which is not as strict through customs I believe. If there is something I can do to verify Ivory vs Ivorine 3, if that would be a concern for resale?

Some things are no longer made because they are crappy.

Will you take $500 for it?

IF they're ivory, you can't Ebay it.

This would be a Gracie cue, instead of the Royce Gracie cue.

Here is the facebook page, which is no longer active:

https://www.facebook.com/gracie.cues

During the mid-2000's, his daughter was listing the cues on Ebay under the Ebay ID: graciecues, which is no longer an active account.

If your cue has ivory....and it would not be ivory unless you paid extra....you have a potential problem
selling your cue to various regions in the USA. You could have your cue confiscated and fined. Be sure
you check out the laws before trying to sell your cue. Your cue can never be sold to anyone in California.
There are other states like that and shipping into or out of the USA is definitely a violation of Federal law.

If you read the thread accurately, the OP back in 2006 wrote Royce Garcie in the header but specified very
clearly that the cue-maker in the Philipines was Gracie Diaz...I bold faced the type so that anyone
could spot that. Sounds like you could have a darling cue or a pig in the poke. As far as ivory being used,
only you'd know but rest assured, the next owner will be confirming that to be the actual case.

I have seen very few Philipino pool cues that used ivory for the joint or butt cap. You could have one but
be sure you have the bill of sale to evidence this or some other form of proof. I suspect Joey was correct.

Well that's something I would certainly be concerned with, if that's the case, let's hope it's not actually Ivory. Is there a way to verify it's Ivory vs an Ivory 3 inlay or something of that nature?

By the way, a big thanks to Renegade_56, Bavafongoul, haystj, Chopdoc and others for your valuable input thus far...greatly appreciated.
