How Would You Play THIS?

This is the right shot as you are following the line of your next desired angle the whole time.

I thought you would agree since last week you shot those three balls that way against me 33 times in a row!

The only reason I would ever deviate from that in this scenario is if I were playing on gaffed equipment: warped slate, goofy rail, torn cloth or something else.

Below is a common 3-ball out with ball-in-hand. How would you play this and why? What are your concerns?
This is a C player layout (if that difficult). With the huge position zone, you don't have to do much to get position on the 8. The large position zone is about 1/8th of the entire table! Simply cut the 7 ball into the closest pocket with no english, and let the 90 degree rule roll you into the position zone.

The 3 biggest concerns are (1) being too close to the rail, (2) hitting a point on the side pocket (or scratching) and (3) overshooting the zone. Thus, it is best to not use running english on the cue ball so you don't pick up speed off of the rail.

I would cut the 7 drawing back for 8,dead in on 8,sting it,then bank 9. then throw my cue across the room and say"take that you MF".:D

I think I've played you before. :D

Three rails off the 7 is the easy and sure way in my book. You don't depend on how much the draw takes for your angle because your shooting a stun shot with some spin. The spin takes more consistently at the angle and speed you hit the short rail and you're coming dead on line towards the eight. The longer line with more rails make the speed easier to control because the rails will mitigate overhitting. The cueball moves farther but the speed of shot is not really much different, maybe softer.

I agree with the general comments, but to get a bit more specific:

I'd be sure I didn't get on the wrong side of the 8 by aiming the cue ball at the 8 off the second diamond from the corner. That means hitting the 7 with stun and no sidespin, giving the longest safe path to the 8.

I would draw the cue straight back (cueball B) for a slight angle on the 8. Then with a stun shot, slide the cue ball (cueball A) for position on an easy cheese shot. I think this is best so you always stay on the right side of the 8 ball. If you have difficulty drawing the cueball from the starting position to cueball B, then that may be a good practice session for you.

I like Tate's method the best.

On good equipment, I also would be tempted to cut the 7 slightly to the left with bottom, drawing back 2-3 feet to the middle of the table. The 8 is easy from there with stun or a little bottom, to get on the 9.

to me the shot is an obvious one but for practice, when faced with a similar layout, i will take ball in hand and try different things such as the shots below. shots that require similar movement come along more than you might think and it's good to have some under your belt when the need arises.

just for grins

The table is wide open. I would set up to hit the seven ball with high inside english to roll back down table to set up on the eight. I'll be fairly close to straight in on the eight and draw or follow shooting the eight to get to the nine depending on exactly where I am at. With where the nine is and the corner pockets wide open either one is fine. The only time I even use a rail is when I am coming off of the seven ball and as close to the rail as the seven is, it is almost impossible to make a mistake that would matter.

Hard to not run out unless I do something really dufus and scratch or nuzzle up against an object ball so that is all I am even slightly concerned about.

I'm somewhat curious as to what method many of you would use to commit suicide if you DIDN'T get out from here. For me, I'm feeling the whole bridge-jump thing in this situation. Different shots call for different routes and, imho (fwiw), I see bridge-jumping as the only logical solution.

Well . . .

I have seen Efren, Francisco, and Ga Yong Kim miss straight in shots on the nine on TV in the last few months. In twenty years I have never seen anyone miss a shot on an internet forum though.

You didn't see them not get out from here with ball-in-hand though! :D

P.S. I'm totally kidding and didn't mean for anyone to take offense to my last post. I guess humor is something that, unfortunately, gets misinterpreted in here all too often.

No but I saw Efren not get out from here on the hill in a pro tournament against Michael Coltrain in Massachusetts. He hit it a little thick and stopped at position A and lost the game and the match because he stared a little too hard at the contact point. He hit it with a good stroke, but a little too full and the english slipped on the first rail.

Jimmy,

I didn't take any offense and did see the humor in your post. However I have seen that any shot is missable and proven this myself on occasion. If you were playing these three shots to win a final for $50,000, how would you play them? The shots diagramed where you are coming off the seven with a makeable shot on the eight all the way is the smart way to go.

Funny you should say that. I saw Efren not get out from here once.

He scooped the cue ball off the table trying to draw it back for shape on the 9.

This was in a little unimportant tourney in LA during 1993.

Hu, I couldn't agree with you more. It IS simple but I've seen a lot of players take this scenario for granted. It's nice to have so many people show exactly what they're thinking about when they're addressing what's supposed to be a gimme.
