i'll try just about anything once
here's some purpleheart that i cut up for some rings & collars
the colors didn't match up with the purpleheart i'm using for the cue
even my colorblind butt could see a drastic difference
it took me about one hour to change the color
whatya think????
by the way,
i broke a few of them apart to make sure color changed throughout the rings
it did

Did you set them out in the sun??

get ready to laugh
i put them in the oven on 350 for an hour
told ya i'd try anything once

This is funny i was just talking to Bob Hunter about Purple heart and what is the best way to cut the wood and the best way to make it darker or brighter purple. the oven and the link fit the bill and thanks for sharing the ideas..

Purple Haze

Brett,
Best post I've seen in a while. Glad to see guys trying things and then sharing them. Now if I can get my wife to let me use the oven. The link was very informative, I always like when there is science behind the black magic. I'd suggest cutting them really thin then lightly salting them when they are done.

i forgot to mention there was aTV dinner in there too!! ;)
not sure if that effected the outcome or not.
seriously, i'm sure everyone has noticed what purpleheart does when drilled.
the shavings are twice as dark.
i thought, what the hell try plain ol heat.
can't say that i'd put a whole cue in the oven though!!
a few years ago i made my first conversion cue on the cue companion lathe
the purpleheart wasn't dark enough to suit me so i tried the sitting in the sun thing for a few days
didn't seem to affect it much
then i got REALLY crazy
made a tent out tin foil to kinda wrap around the cue, set a halogen lamp on it while spinning
it really darkened up too, in just a few hours
damn near melted the cue companion though !!! :p

Okay now I'm really curious how purple heart will react to my uv light. I guess I just figured out what I'm doing tommorow night! Great post!

i'm guessing it will work also.
sherm i think it was, told me that.
same effect as setting out in the sun.
purpleheart cookout tomorrow nite???
one time i took my leather belt and wrapped around some purpleheart spinning as fast as i could get the cue companion to fly
it did turn darker, but i couldn't get it even, came out kinda splotchy here & there
screwed up my good belt too   ;)
in 30 years of working in construction for cheap ass bosses,
one thing i ALWAYS had to do,
was improvise and make due with what i had!!!

U can use a blow dryer too.
Paint stripper as well but those rings will warp.
when???
i was concerned about that
so i have the thinnner rings clamped right now
i figured they would warp right away if they were going to warp at all ??
i tried the blow dryer once also
didn't have the patience i guess

Cool Idea

Looks like It evened them out pretty well, and that could be an advantage when using It in the ringwork too, and getting it from a different source. Think It will help even this piece out? It has a few pesky lines and blotches in It :p :D

Seriously though, here one of them I have in the works right now. This is just a dufferin a friend hooked Me up with a while back to make a few conversions from, and I'm just getting around to doing something with this one. It may become My new break cue.
Speaking of color changes- It was a nice color with the original finish on, but when I first took the finish off, and ran a cleanup pass on It, It turned an ugly brown color, so only the top layer must have been colored up (probably due to the finish locking It in or something). I hung It near My best fluorescent fixture, and I believe It just has cool whites installed, and a lens cover over those, so nothing UV or anything special. After a few days one side turned this color, so I rotated It again waited a couple of days, and It colored back up all the way around. I have one PurpleHeart shaft left, and I think It may go on this one since It's probably going to be a breaker anyway. Wish I had taken before pictures to show how brown It was after the cleanup pass to show the difference.

Edit- Sorry for going wide on the picture, I can't figure how how to remanage the attatchment through the editting feature. If anyone knows how, and could tell me, I'd be happy to fix It.

Greg

> Thomas Wayne says the very best way to make sure your underwear and socks are purple is throw a little block of purpleheart in the washer. What do you have to do to get the really bright purple out of it though,or is that having to do more with the selection of the wood to start with? Tommy D.

The bad news:

There are no less than 13 specii of wood marketed
commercially under the designation "Purpleheart"

a process that will change one from brown to purple,
may very well do the oposite with another species

Think 'trial and error'
