How many people would pay $300 and travel to see a dream match with the 2 best one pocket players in the world, the same night see 9 ball, and maybe an exhibition of straight pool?
I am actually considering sponsoring such a match combined with a pool cue promotion.
Lets call it a night to remember, after the matches the players mingle with the fans, give semi private instruction,Cues are given away, autograhed cues by some of the great cue makers.
Make no mistake,if its not profitable to me as a sponsor it won't happen, but I would love to see it happen.Who would come if we have it at the Derby,or Allen Hopkins,or Vegas ,and what match would you like to see?

Please do not start an argument on the thread if you have no interest in being a part of a fun ,and make sure you understand I am dead serious about sponsoring this dream event if there is an interest.

Feel free to recomend matches or players you would like to see.You might even recomend some older players I would have wanted to give you a chance to see Eddie Taylor,Wimpy,Willie Mosconi or one of those great players, but its too late and some of you will never get to see them, but I am looking to see the matches you will always wish you had seen.

Go ahead, tell me who the best player in the world is,and remember if we play 9 ball for my money IT WILL BE 2 SHOT ROLL OUT,9 BALL LIKE IT OUGHTA BE .

For you younger guys you will be in for a real shock when you see pool played like Buddy played, remember Louie Rorerts, you have your other places for 1 foul, but for just one night lets rackem up and play old fashion 9 ball.

Give me your ideasif you want to see something for the ages, because that what I want to do if its possible.

If you want to be part of this, send me a private message,no money is requested.

Are you saying for $300 we would see a display of talent face off in multiple game types, get one of your infamous cues, get to mingle with the players, and get semi private instruction? That sounds like a deal to me- I'd be in if its at Hopkin's Super Billiard Expo!

Who are the players?

$300 entrance fee?

ehh... i dunno.

Strange but I see nothing wrong with betting 300 on a match, but paying 300 just to watch it doesnt sound like a good deal to me. $50 or 100 entrance fee is about as high as I would go for one night. I dunno though. If Efren was playing 1p with someone like Tony Chohan for $100k, i might pay bigger bucks to sweat that. I guess it depends alot on the players, what the match is played for and where. If I had to spend $500 to get to the event, another $100-200 on hotel and take a day off of work, then no way.

many may feel the same way,but I would like to remind you that this thread is only about and for people who might have an interest, not those who don't.
Every year many people attend events such as the U>S< Open golf, heavy weight fights, world serieis, superbowl,NCAA basketball and spend thousands of dollars and the rest of their life talking about the time they had, others never do and thats fine. The price of this event,if it ever comes to pass will be $300 or more,it will provide a great time for those who can afford to come and have a great time.

This event will be all about the fans, the collectors, the enthusiast of the game,Those of you who like the idea and would enjoy a night with others like yourself, please respond if just a few of us maybe 2or 300 want to have some fun this year, then who knows what it will lead to.

Just for example how many of you woul;d like to see the Glen pool cue collection,or spend the evening with the great cuemakers, personally getting involved, and maybe getting something that can only be had right here.

One thing is for sure,we will stand behind what we do,the only question is are you interested and what would make you happy to see.Who is the player you would like to see and talk to,because this event is about you and me and guys like us.No player will be invited unless he wants to participatei n the fun with us,not just our money.

I ask one favor if you are not interested or don't want to spend the money, please don't take the time to tell us why,I am only interesrted in why to do this, not why not to.There are already plenty who are already not doing anything.

challenge match

Count me in. I would love to see Mr. Glen's collection. I believe he has a couple of cues that I once owned. Including the Balabushka that was the last one he made before his death. I wonder if he will sell it back to me for what I sold it for in 1976. I have paid more than $300 to watch Buddy, Louie and others play, but this would be better because I wouldn't have to rack or worry about my cue falling. Watching 2 good players play 2 foul 9 ball is really cool! And to see Efran play is worth the $300 alone. It is like seeing Ali, Hogan and Ruth etc.

I'm in.

THE GINGERBREAD MAN and JOEY, THE GLOVE may be available for an exhibition match. Please see my agent, SmorgassBored to cover the details of the contract.

Thanks,

Sure I would be interested. Anyway gateway city. NY, LA, Chicago, Dallas, Las Vegas, etc. Not in Kalamazoo or Olathe where getting to is a drive or small airport. THis is just my requirements. But what is more important is who are you? Dont take this wrong but are you a room owner? A promoter? A cuemaker? WHo would I be sending my money to?

LOL There a just a handful of players that even know what two-shot shoootout is!! Better explain it to them. But I'll just play some of that! If I still remember how myself.

heres an idea

dean, why not charge 300 and for example give the person who paid the fee a 5 day road trip with a player. this would probably be a better experience then just watching a challenge match.

5 days on the road X $30 about a day for room X = $150 and 150 for you getting a player that you would stake or go in with.

While I disagree with your cue marketing tactics and think this idea seems vaguely familiar I think the spin on it is valid. If you could put together a weekend package with a solid challenge match, the Glenn collection, maybe some dinners or a golf outing perhaps some video for the participants to take home with them of them interacting or playing with the pros it would be fairly easy to get 20 guys at $300 each. The key is adding value.

I am interested to see how this works out. I have a feeling the secret squirel marketing tactics will do you no good for this. Tell them what they will get upfront, make it good and you will get your customers.

Anything that allows players to benefit and fans to have a great experience is a good idea and I wish you good luck with it.

What seems to be the problem here?

This thread is not about who to send money to,tell em who ,what I am doing. The thread is to determine how many people would like to have a good time doing what i described getting together with the pool legends for 1 day, watching a challenge match, recieving personal instructions from the players, don't ask me to tell you who it will be tell me who and what you would like to see.
I am not selling tickets,I am asking what would be your idea of a great time,if I like it I will try to promote it.

Keep in mind my idea can only last 1 day,and I thought it best to do it at a time and place where many of us were going to be anyway,

Am I wrong in thinking pool players and fans are not like other fans.In boxing we used to spend much more and travel the world to see Ali,Frazier, the same for the super bowl.

Take away DCC and the us open, and pool seems kinda dead,I don't play leagues, the 9 ball is no fun for me,but I lwould like to see great one pocket,I would like to understand straight pool.I saw that Schmidt offered to explain his shooting to a few for $100, but I wasn't able to go to the derby or I would gladly pay $100 or $500 for that matter,I would pay $500 to have Effrin or Gabe spend a few hours teaching me how,or Freddie on the banks.Am I the only one who feels this way?

What I am trying to determine is this, are there several of you who would like to do these thinds if it can be done ,and are you able to afford
a day like this?

If you can then respond here or in private,if you can't then move onto the next post I am mot asking for money, but advice.

In case you haven't noticed pool is on the decline, pool rooms are closing right and left, professional players can not make a living. The game needs a shot in the arm,and I am thinking about making an effort to do something about it,please lay off the wise cracks and lend a hand.

Challenge match

This is a great idea. To be able to talk with these players cue makers, etc.
would be something special. Years ago before all the tournaments and leagues all of the players were in the action rooms all the time. you got see them play and listen to the stories for hours. When not much was
going on you could match up cheap and play them. Sure you got robbed
but it was worth it ten times over. You never wanted to go home because
you might miss something. Their were so many colorful players then. To
see them again and watch 2 foul would be great. Short list : Buddy, sjdick
Keith,R.A.,Earl,Nick,Jimmy R.,Efren,Allen H. DO IT.

I am in as well.
Holding it in Vegas during BCA would work best for me, I am going to be there and plan on spending some cash while I am there anyways. I would prefer if it were limited to 20 people, maybe we all can play a few games with the pro's.
I would also prefer 1 pocket or straight pool, and if you added a dvd of the match being played.
As far as players, the usual for me, any of the top players.
Great idea, fill me in when you get the response you need and can determine if its worth while.
Nate.
