'Hustler Days' the Book- Any Good?

I'm thinking about buying this book. Who here has read it, and is it any good? I'm wondering if it's worth the $20.... I think it's only 300 pages, which is pretty short compared to most books I read. How does it compare to 'Playing Off The Rail'?
 
Definatly worth the money. "Playing Off The Rail" is good but it pales in comparison to "Hustler Days" in my opinion.

It's available on Amazon for $10.17 + shipping. Another good one is McGoorty, a billiard hustlers life.

It's a very good read, lots of good stories about some of the older era players. And some good pics too. I have an extra harback copy still in very good condition that I'll sell to you for $7. Send me a PM if interested

The writing is real and filled with several stories of different events, all centering around the three main players (Lassiter, Wanderone, and Breit). It's not written with the same flair as Billiards: Hustlers and Heroes... by John Grissim, but it's still an excellent read. It's not really comparable with Playing Off The Rail.

Fred, I just wanted to chime in and say that Grissim's book is my favorite pool book. It's also Billy Stroud's.:D
 
I think i read it 2 or 3 times it was that good,im a Red fan forever and wish i could get more things about him but the book gave me a good view into his life.

Wow, that's kinda like saying, "Someone went out of their way to document the history of pool during its biggest rise with detailed information on some of its greatest players and I want to know if it's worth the money I'll spend on beer tonight. By the way, I also play pool."


Seriously, I think I'll buy just about any book (minus some of the instructionals) on pool just because it's there.
 
It's a good read. Goes fast. Gives a very nice history of the game by documenting the lives of a couple of players from that era.

You can always pick up a copy of this in a good used bookstore. (I got mine from the Strand.)

Sorry but I think "Hustler Days" pales in comparison to "Playing off the Rail".

POTR is a page turner. Hustler days aint even close.
 
As someone else mentioned, compared to all the other ways you waste your money -- food, rent, booze -- the cost is negligible. I also think it's a very good book.

Get "Hustler Days."
 
I just bought it myself from Barnes & Nobles for $8.50 delivered to my house with no shipping charge. So far, it is a great read.

It is not consistently superb, but there's enough good stuff in "Hustler Days" to make it a good value. Personally, I enjoyed "Playing Off the Rail" more.

I purchased "Hustler Days" back in '04. Once I started reading it I couldn't put it down. I was fascinated by the stories of the players, their lives and their times.

IMO, it's a far better read than "Playing Off The Rail".
