I feel like I'm grasping a little here, but has anyone seriously considered hyptnotism?
For example, I can make any number of great shots.
Impossible cuts, perfect shape....4...even 5 rail banks...etc...but I lose my focus. I choke when it seems to really count.
Makes ya crazy.
I can turn around and make the shot 100 times for practice....and miss the damned shot when it counts.......AGAIN!!!
So I guess it's a mental block, or some subconscious block....I don't know.
I do know it doesn't have to be that way, so I am really trying to figure out what I can do to change this problem.
So I have read and heard about people being hyptnotised for all sorts of things. Mental and behavioural.
so what do others think?
What could it hurt?
They "break" something up there........ and I suddenly shoot like Earl....but also act like him too? Would that be so bad?
Does anyone have any experience with being hyptnotised that they are willing to share with us?

Hmmm...sounds to me like you were unconciously subconciously hypnotized to f%#*up when it counts. I recommend against more hypnotism as your game may really go to shit. You should probably go see a shrink about this problem..he'll likely want to hypnotize you to remove any effects from the hypnotism.

It's Called Choking

Your choking buddy. This is usually caused by adrenalin. You can do an adrenalin wash. Try deep breathing exercises and relaxation.

Hypnotism is not the easy way out of choking. It's nothing spectacular and not a secret science to make you do things you are not otherwise able to do.

I'd recommend mental imaging to get over choking. It helped me. Some people call it self-hypnotism and I think the name isn't very good but you can avoid choking by practising mental imaging on tough spots where you'd be most likely to choke.

Here's a long recent thread on hypnotism and self-hypnosis:

Note: Adrenaline is a side-effect of fear. It is the fear that is the cause.

But what is the cause of fear? I believe develops from Doubt.

So what is the cause of the doubt that leads to the fear?

Work that out and you can solve the choking problem!

DOUBT: is a condition of mental darkness as the result of not enough clear thinking to know what to do and what not to do in a situation.

Guys, this is an exact copy of a thread I started a couple of weeks ago.

True to form, this nit can't even make an original post.

Entertain the fool if you must, but don't be fooled yourself.

Emotions

Some people can look real calm from the outside, but
be churning on the inside.

Pressure situations bring to the surface any doubts,
emotions going on, or a lack of confidence. If you are
a self-assured person inside, confidant of what you can
do & of what you can not do, then you will be smarter
for it. Knowing yourself inside is part of that.

I have beat some players simply because I am a pretty
self assured person inside, and they weren't, not because
my skill was greater.

Meditation techniques, and martial arts training helped me
a lot, I think. Plus, I do not like to lose, never have, never will.

Eat more grits, so you will have more 'grit' when the pressure
is on ... lol

Can you advise me on who (what specialty) to contact to learn the meditation/martial arts techniques that helped you?

Wow...you just asked a question of a seven and a half year old post :)

2737 days after it was posted!

I believe that "IF" "YOU" believe it will help, then it may. The alternative may be to indulge in introspection, if you can be honest with yourself. When we do that and are completely honest, we can often see that we are not as good as we would like to think we are and quite often we realize that we simply aren't willing to put in the practice time needed to get to the level that we would like to play at consistently. IF we come to that realization, we can then move forward with an action plan to achieve our goals and implement it or we can stay where we are and make excuses. It's ok really, many of us make excuses every day. I do it and know others do as well. There are no quick fixes and the best fix, dedicated practice and plain ole hard work and time on task are far too difficult for the majority of people in any given area. That's why, there are only a very few who rise to world class levels.

then again given the age of this thread maybe Pocket Point is back.

Yes it works I hypnotoized the cue ball last night at league and it behaved much more like I wanted! The only thing better is doing the move in I Love Jeannie..

One summer "St. Louis Louie" Louie Roberts stayed with my brother Calvin, in conversation Louie said he used to get himself hypnotized before big matches and tournaments, he said at times it helped to play better.

I call this the Duck Syndrome. Looks calm on the surface but paddling like H ell underneath.

I highly recommend Ryan Elliott. It works very well not only in pool but also anything else that requires your complete attention.

The main reason people choke is because of bad fundamentals. Then, when you choke over and over again from the bad fundamentals, it becomes psychological. The cure is not hypnosis. The cure is to be more fundamentally sound at the pool table by developing an accurate, repeatable stroke. This cures both the bad fundamentals and the psychological element of choking.
