I Believe Introductions Are in Order

Hi.

I just joined and I just wanted to introduce myself. I?m Richard and I currently reside in Phoenix, AZ. I fly freight planes for a living and just about any plane for fun. I have about a million hobbies, so let?s just say I have a ?plethora? of interests. The top three after pool would have to be fishing, hunting, and photography.

My father taught me to play 8 ball when I was eight or nine in the basement of the First Baptist Church in Tulsa, OK (hope that doesn?t get anyone in trouble ;-)). He taught me to use a balanced stance, an open bridge, keep my triceps level with the table and try to stroke smoothly through the ball.

I bought my first cue (a green McDermott) in 1988. I was nineteen. I think I saw ?The Hustler? for the first time about six months before I bought that stick.

I?ve been playing for about 26 years now and I?m almost entirely self-taught (the vaunted trial-and-error method). I am rated a BCA 7, and I?m told I would be an APA 5 or 6. The best I ever played in an 8 ball tournament I ran 11 consecutive tables. Didn?t know at the time just how crazy that really was. But I guess the most accurate description of my playing ability is I?m an aggressive shotmaker learning to make myself into a good tournament/league player.

I gave up gambling recently, but I still like to play tournaments.

The reason I?m here is two-fold. First, I?d like to meet some new players, hopefully players that can teach me something. Like a different game. I?m actually very interested to learn straight pool or one pocket. Second, since I?m largely self-taught I?m very interested to know if my theories and strategies are valid/invalid or just plain crazy. So, besides pestering people for a game, I'll probably be posting questions about the game, its mechanics/strategies etc. basically to find out if I'm nuts or not.

Anyway, like I said I just thought I?d say hi and maybe be able to say ?glad to meet ya,? real soon.

Sincerely,

Richard

Hi Richard and welcome to the forums,perhaps we can meet up and play some one hole and if you dont know the game maybe I can show you alittle something,I am still kind of new to pool but wise beyond my time,haha.BTW maybe you can teach me how to fly. :grin:

Hi Lenny;

Nice to (kind of) meet ya. If you wouldn't mind teaching someone how to play straight pool/one pocket I'd like to get together sometime and shoot a few games. My game is 8 ball. I dabble in 9, I've even won a few tourneys somehow, But I've always been interested in straight pool.

By the way, in AZ I'm rated a 7. Rumor has it I'll be moved up to an 8 next meeting. Not sure I like the idea though. Heck, I like having a game or two advantage on 8's and 9s.

My leagues are all finishing up in a couple weeks, so maybe we could hook up sometime after that.

Anyone can fly. It's the landing most people have trouble with. ;-)

Welcome to the forums, "FastMikie". It sounds like you are looking for a game so you should just challenge the Arizona Billiards KING to a match. The tournament fee is $50 and if you win, then you can have bragging rights until someone better comes along. :smile:

Have fun,

and they rated you a 7 in AZ? WOW is all I have to say. 11 racks in a row and rated a 7?. A 7 can run maybe 1 or 2 on his best day.

Richard...Welcome to the forum. One of the best ways to check whether or not your mechanics/strategies are sound, is to take a lesson from a qualified instructor.

Welcome to the forum!

(When you said you won 11 consecutives racks of 8-ball I suppose you meant that you didn't run then without letting your opponent visit the table?)

If you are interested in learning more about 14-1 I suggest you visit the Straight Pool Forum here on AZB. It's the best forum on here, even better than the mainforum.

Welcome to the Dojo Richard. May your time here enlighten you. As far as being a AZ 7 and running 11 racks, mad props to ya. I'm still an AZ 7 and can barely run around my house lol

Welcome

Hi Richard,

Welcome, I'm sure that you will find what you are looking for here on AZ Billiards.

There are a lot of knowledgable people here but watch out for the sharks, ha, ha, just kidding.

Welcome Richard! If you want to learn something about One Pocket, you have one of the best players in the world right in your area. Yes, check out Scott Frost next time he plays down at Kolby's.

Also, have you met Jeff Gray, another pool enthusiast in the Phoenix area? He has been a pilot for Continental for many years. I hope I got the right airline.

There are many good players in your neck of the woods and thanks to Jimmy Mendoza and Dennis Orender, a regular series of tournaments for them to play in.

If you feel like traveling, come over to Hollywood Billiards in L.A. on Aug. 31-Sept. 1 and play in our Eight Ball tourney. Should be right up your alley Mr. Eleven Racks! And there's $3,000 in added money!

Heya King;

Sorry but I gave up gambling. But I'll play for a drink if that okay. Beer vs. iced tea? I gave up drinking as well. :-(

Hi JABr;

Hehe, did I mention I'm Irish? And I eat Lucky Charms every morning for breakfast?

Yeah, like I said, I had no idea at the time just how nuts that was. In fact, I was so dumb I actually thought I was that good!

Hiya Roy;

Yes, I ran 11 tables, it was winner breaks so 3 opponents never got to shoot and the fourth got his first shot in our third game when I couldn't pocket the 8. That was 15 years ago in St. Louis, MO. Like I said, I had no idea it was that big a deal. I thought most of the players I was shooting with that day had done something similiar before. As far as I knew it was just my turn.

What's funny is that I didn't even win that tourney. I took third! LOL
