This post was inspired by midnightpulp's post, thank you sir!

Bowling has a great handicapping system so I decided to fit a game of 10-ball into the bowling 'mold'.

The Game =10 Ball
Frame 1 = Rack 1
Throw 1 of 2 = Breaking and running balls until you miss. (Break and Run = Strike)
Throw 2 of 2 = You take ball and hand from where you missed and try to run out. (Getting out = Spare)
Scoring = Same as bowling. 1 ball = 1 pin. Strikes & Spares add bonus points just like bowling
Frames = 10 Frames

You can also do this with 9 ball and count the 9 as 2 pins...either way works.

After a while you will develop an average which you can handicap in the same way bowling does: (220 - AVG)*0.80 = Handicap

This would be a cool cheap Friday night tournament to run. The only downfall would be that you would have to sit and watch someone to make sure they don't cheat. But if you assign each to player to watch 1 other player it would work out. 1 round and the tournament would be over. You can also reduce the frames to shorten the matches if you want. Lots of options here...

Has this been done before?

ktrepal85.. I think you have a good idea for keeping track of playing improvements. This has been done before.. or a variation.. in a game called Bowliards.

Any time I hear that statement, my first thoughts are ''you gotta bet''. ;)

Didn't read a word of any posts, just thought I'd toss this thought on top of the pile.

Seems everyone is using fargo for this. Also just running 9 ball racks gives you a decent idea about ratings over 10 racks. Edit, sorry I did not clarify originally, ball run each rack after ball in hand. 1-2 average D-/D 2-3 D+/C-, 3-4 C/C+, 5-6 B-/B/B+ 6-7 B+/A-/A 8-9 A+/Open. Roughly about that.

Yes this is "BOWLIARDS" there is also a strategy to this game, that if you have balls tied up you can take an intentional foul and drive the cueball into the trouble area to free the balls up and go for the spare, this should add to one's skill level for playing the strategy.

I used to play this game all the time back in the day with a few friends of mine. Great Game

Is that balls or racks? I dont think any of these numbers would be anywhere close to right if its racks

Yeah, if those are accurate numbers of racks each level player should run I really, really suck. Depending on the table layout I can have a tough time running 1 out of 5 racks on my Gold Crown with 4 1/2" pockets.

It doesn't need correcting........... I think you are just not good enough to play handicap pool so you want changes the give you an advantage.

The OP's suggestion was to use 10 ball in rotation and scored like bowling. Bowlliards onthe other hand uses all 15 balls; shoot any ball any time. And as Steve stated, definitely a strategy to get a high score.

A local pool room used this game for a tournament with a few changes. 3 frames, first shot was rotation, second shot was any ball. Also, the rack was set numerically, 1, then 2-3, and so on. For the second frame, the 2 was up front and the 1 was now in back corner. 3 ball in front for the 3rd frame.

It was also handicapped like bowling.

How does the handicapping work as translated to the letter format we're more familiar with? For example, would 120+ be considered a B player? 80=C+?

Bowliards you say...
...a no contact way of competing....
....:boring2::boring::shrug:

You're describing POOL-300.

After doing a Google search, it was that game, right down to needing to pocket the lowest ball, rather than hitting the lowest ball. I think they only tried it for a few weeks and went back to 9-ball.
