I have a coworker who was duped by KT

Funny thread. BTW... with all the references to AMWAY, they no longer exist...now Quickstar. I read a while ago, there was an "inner circle" within AMWAY that actually were making big $$$. At the expense of the poor suckers in the lower levels.

I had some friends back in the 60's that were going to make it by selling vacuum cleaners. Of course they were not called vacuum cleaners. They had a fancy name along the lines of "environmental system".

Anyone remember Rainbow? One of my buddies really believed in the system and he spent a lot of money just in gas to try and sell on commission and never made a cent!

Amway still exist. They did about $5 billion last year. hmmmmm

Your buddy's experience is normal. That's why the ones who can do it make the money. If everyone could do it (the biggest lie in NM, btw), there'd be no money in it.

How much of that was bought by the dealers themselves? It's sitting in basements now and will never reach an actual end user. It's a phony figure like a kid selling Girl Scout cookies winning an award for sales, when her grandmother bought them all.

Funny, I've NEVER, EVER, seen an Amway cleaning product INSIDE someone's actual HOUSE (not counting garages).:D

Interesting about AMWAY. I live in CT and people I know that were in AMWAY said it was QUICKSTAR. I assumed that meant AMWAY no longer existed? Obviously a wrong assumption apparently.

I had friends try and recruit me into AMWAY years back as well as PRIMERICA which at one point was doing so well that bought The Travelers Insurance Co. Another one that claimed NOT to be a pyramid was Market America.

Good observation jimmyg. They typically have a minimun amount of "product" each member must purchase (or sell) each month.

The Market America (I think that was the name) you had to purchase a 1-800 service as well as all the product literature that you gave to prospective members/customers.

Seems there are no shortage of scams!

I had a ex-roomate, who was big into the whole "Team of Destiny" and tried endlessly to get me to go to these seminars and stuff, and he would tell me how they had certain speakers who were showing up who were well off money wise.

While i always said no, I was too busy or something, I was always thinking, the only reason those guys have money is because of stupid people like you who feel for thier speech.

Now, about 18months ago my mom started doing something along this line, with a company called Mellaluca, which sold chemical free products. Now you can only imagine how hard it is, to tell your mom you dont want to help her out, but i did.

My mom only did this part time, but she did pretty well, making about 400$ a month from it. Obviously I got plenty of FREE stuff too, since she had a bunch of the products. Now while I could care less about anything that looks or sounds like Amyway. I thought the chemical free products had atleast purpose, because I know alot of people cant use anything with chemicals or try to stay chemical free. So they dont have a allergic reaction.

But she has since stopped doing this because it became a hassle and people would say they are interested but when it came down too it, they backed out.

Obviously my mom wasnt duped by KT, but i understand where people are comming from.

I've also known of people who got into a Amway type of program and thought they were going to be living the life, and it ended up they almost lost everything. because they quit thier job and tried to make this crap work.

I have no idea of how many basements are full of stuff. How do you know when no one else does?

For the record, my company is older than Amway (>50 years), I've personally been in business for over 25 years, 20 full time, and I don't have ANY distributors or customers who have a basement full.

You wouldn't wanna buy something, would you?;)

This sounds as impossible as some claims from some in NM. $250K "taken" from him? How was this done?

I am not sure of the particulars of the entire "scam" but it was a network marketing company that was selling long distance accounts. The company that would fulfill the long distance was a real company (LCI I think) but the company recruiting the people was a scam like 99% of the NW marketing companies.

It actually was quite easy, they got him to fund an office building and pay speakers to come in, hire staff, buy sound and stage equipment etc... Then he started a branch in California while he still lived in Michigan and they kept telling him how many people they were signing up. He would send out 20K and they would send back 3K telling him they signed up 300 people and soon the residuals would be comming in like crazy! Many thousands of people were signed up, but 90% of the money they paid in went to a few people that started the company and the rest funneled down to the rest. He still receives checks every month for several dollars, I guess if he lives to be 3,000 years old it might pay him back.

This is how most of the fly by night network marketing scams are set up, you get yourself, family members and a few friends at the first level and then sign up others. It doesn't matter what you are trying to sell you make sure that the money people pay in for the inital payment all goes to the top level. Then if you get someone with more money you sucker them into paying the major costs of renting office space, etc... and you rake in the dough.

Not a bad way to make money if you have no morals.

Multi-level marketing....what a bunch of garbage.

There was a guy I knew who WAS in the Air Force. Sharp troop, big future in the military.....but couldn't wait to get rich because he was going to make a fortune off of Herbal life. He was dumping THOUSANDS into this shit. I could hear him on his cell phone calling potential "clients" giving his big Herbal Life speal.....I just wanted to vomit listening to this hustle. He seemed very desperate to start recouping some of these funds....but once he built his team it was just going to role in. Just got to build up that team. Every other sentence out of his mouth contained the two words "residual income". Residual income this, and residual income that...Jesus Christ.

Saw him a few days ago and asked how the Herbal Life was doing. BTW, before I had heard him borrowing thousands from his parents to buy more shit...I mean just dumping the money away. I tried to talk him out of it but this guy was motivated. This guy went on Herbal Life cruises and could quote you the biography of the Gazillionaire who started it...I mean he was brain washed to hell. Super smart guy with endless potential but just blinded to this "get rich quick" scheme.

Ok..so I saw him a few weeks ago after not seeing him for probably 5 months. I asked about Herbal Life and he got a weird look on his face. He replied, "Oh, I'm with a group of people investing in real estate." I'm thinking......ok...another get rich quick scheme.

I'm sorry, but anyone who ever gives me this, "I'm getting rich in my pajamas on my computer.".....well, I just won't buy it. It is garbage.

The ONLY multi-level marketing companies where one could truly succeed are essentially proven.....and designed by women - for women. I've known several women actually who did pretty good selling Mary Kae products, Pampered Cheff (they sell some awesome products) and another Candle type deal. They get these women together in groups, testing out products and rack in the dough. My wife is a high level manager for a pretty big publication here in D.C....but she had a friend who did these little candle parties and had a lot of girls UNDER her in the pyramid and she was REALLY making a killing. BUT, they offer a lot of original products, and had a pretty smart way of getting those women together sampling products, and ooohhhing and aaahhhing...and writing checks. I was forced to go to one with my wife, and I was amazed at how quick they would buy these products. I was almost tempted to start selling these gosh darn candles myself...LOL.

Ok, all for now. I just get mad after seeing someone I know lose so much cash on these stupid schemes. Didn't mean to ramble on so far.

I still don't get this one. Rooms for what, I wonder? Recruiting meetings?

Oh well, thanks for answering as best as you could. You story illustrates the FACT that if no one is using the product, no real business is created, just hot air.
