I like Cuetec cues...

I've shot with two Cuetec cues lately: an Allison Fisher model that I only used to break with, and a new one I've never seen before that my friend received as a gift from her father in law who owns a Pool/Darts shop.

I love the stiff, solid hit! My shots went exactly where I aimed them and I felt much more 'in touch' with the cue ball.

But I've always had the notion that Cuetecs are 'undesirable', and pretty much everything I know about cues I learned here, so why are they dismissed out of hand the way they are? I really like the feel of them. I'd hand over my McDermott for that Cuetec right now if I could.

Surly,

I think a lot of people that bash Cuetec cues are doing so over quality issues that they had with them. That and the fact that the fiberglass cladded SST shaft leaves much to be desired in the the minds of most serious shooters.
My first "real" two-piece cue (meaning one NOT purchased at WallyWorld/K-Mart) was a Cutec w/12mm diameter SST shaft. I still have it and pull it out at the home table every so often. It actually has a pretty good hit and I usually shoot well with it. I don't like the way the shaft has a sticky feel to it, but I always wear a glove when shooting with this shaft.

Maybe one day I'll understand the subtleties of different cues, but I don't know what's more important than a true, solid shot... if a 'cheap' cue can deliver that, I'm thrilled.

What kind of quality issues are you talking about?

You'd have to do a search to find out what the quality issues were. I may be mistaken, but it seems like a lot of the problems were with the joints.
FWIW, I have had no problems with the one I own, although it sees minimal use today.

The joint on the Cuetec I played with today was exactly the same as my McDermott, but the sensation after hitting the ball was so different! It had to be that sweet 360 shaft. It also had a pro taper. I just loved it. And it loved me.

2 of my highest 14.1 runs.....127, and 118 were with a Cuetec Earl Strickland jump break model....go figure.

the cues are solid, but they do take a little getting used to with the covered shafts.

You have to go with what feels right to you. Everyone is different in what they like in a cue. I bought a Thunderbolt about 5 years ago after a long lay-off. When I brought it into the poolroom I got all kinds of looks. It was like, "How could you buy that?". I didn't like it after a few weeks and went back to a Viking. I could never get use to the BONK sound it made on the hits. I sold it to a lady at the poolroom that plays a lot and she went up a level with it. To each his/her own. Johnnyt

My biggest problem with Cuetecs is the fiberglass shafts get very sticky. Even with the coating it wore off within 1 month and became very sticky.

Cuetecs are prob the best "starter" cue out there for the money. Cuetecs do not have a bad hit to them. The shafts are a joke, however. Fiberglass is a joke. I bet a cuetec with regular wood shaft would be decent.

Gerry, you can prob play with a Budweiser cue from Sears and run 75 (with the screw-on tip).

I was wondering about that coating. I wanted to try shooting with it, not just breaking... We'll see. If it fails to perform, I'll be the first to start *****ing about it.

One thing I have noticed is that the weight is in the very butt end of it. It's balanced much diferently than a regular cue...

To each his own...but:

My sister's first cue was a cuetec. One night I used it and as I was putting it away, I accidentally dropped it to the ground. I was sitting so the fall was only like twenty five inches. The butt split in half! It may have been a prior condition but who knows.

Simply put, they are a mass produced cue that is not made in the USA. I personally think the feel seems artificial and I do not like the fiberglass like shaft. The lower end butts are bland and seem, for the lack of a better word, cheap.

My first cue ever was a FatCat, maybe twenty bucks at most, I felt this cue was better than any cuetec, IMO

It just comes down to what you personally like, they get bashed because there is a majority that do not like them...that about the best reasoning I can give.

That's nice of you to say Spidey!.....hey man, you going to the Derby? I'm working on scheduling to go myself, just want to make sure I got some buds there to hang with. I think my bud jimmy is going with Allen H., besides that, I dunno?

I've got a Cuetec Python which I got for free when I bought my first McDermott. I really didn't like the fibreglass clad shaft. I used it for a brak cue for more than a yr, and I played with it when I sent my McDermott out for service. That's when I decided to buy my 2nd McD. I just couldn't deal with the feel of the shaft. If I wore a glove it probably wouldn't be an issue.
I will say that everyone I loaned it to loved the way it played. I thought maybe I was missing something, but after playing with it for a few weeks (waiting for my McD) I knew it wasn't for me.
I recently pulled it out when I broke the tenon on my Jerico Stinger, and it still breaks good, nothng like the break I am getting with the stinger. I'll keep it around for emergencies and to let friends use.

I don't think I would buy one, but their 360 shaft is unclad wood. I can see how you might like the hit of a cuetec with a real wood shaft on it. Makes it a whole different animal, like a cheaper version of the predator (also chinese made)

I'm not gonna make it to the DCC this year, sadly. I WILL be at the VF SBE, however. We'll def meet up then.

Dave

by the way, i said fiberglass is a joke because it gets way too sticky and doesn't feel like wood. it feels like 'plastic' in your hand.
