I lost 2 friends

One last comment.
My 2 friends and I were well aware of our political leanings.
They knew that praising Bush would prompt me to respond.
I was going to react when they said his greatness was insured.
It was baiting, plain & simple.
I really appreciate all of your comments. They have helped
put a little perspective to this.

A smart person said there are three sides to every story...your side, their side, and the truth. I thinking passing judgement on this situation is impossible without actually witnessing it. Sounds to me like you are just wanting someone to validate your actions.

In my opinion, if you lost two friends then you handled it the wrong way no matter how you look at it...because you lost two friends. Friendship is way more important than any pool game.

You might want to reflect on this situation to see how you could have handled it more amicably(sp) so that the situation was resolved without losing your buddies. I have had many heated debates with many a good friend...but no matter how heated...we stayed friends.

????????????????????????.....If divergent political viewpoints cost your friendship you havn't lost a thing......

I don't know what your history with these friends are, and you didn't say what kind of game this was. If this is just a friendly game, even if you're playing seriously, then they probably don't think sharking is that a big deal. In that case, they probably think you overreacted and it'll blow over, or else it doesn't sound like you were very good friends.

hondo, we love you. Just tell them you're sorry and that you forgive them and love them. ;)

I agree . . .

Hondo,
I can't imagine losing a friend over politics or religion myself. Ultimately it's your own call. If the baiting was done in a good natured way no problem, friends may push our buttons sometimes.

It is ridiculous that GWB is blamed for everything except for teenage pregnancy in New Orleans....

I agree. After Hondo cools off he can decide if the baiting was malicious or good humored. Depending on what is at stake, distracting people can be just in fun. He will be the one to decide the intent behind what happened. It would be ridiculous to lose two true friends over a few words. Of course if the baiting was indeed malicious, they weren't true friends and he is well rid of them.

Of course I agree about teen pregnancy in new orleans too, we still blame Clinton for that. I even saw one of the old "I went all the way with LBJ" license plates awhile back. Somebody with a looong memory!

Hondo,

They were way out of line! You were totally justified in my opinion. And, I know it's not about the politics but you were right there too! LOL!!

Why drag the politics into this discussion? What if you were playing
well & a so-called friend started talking about how drunk driving
laws were too harsh and kept trying to bait you to argue with him?
Really, Russ, can't I have an honest discussion here about
a situation that has me really upset without having to hear
all that tired " libs are full of hatred for Bush" rhetoric?
As I told KY Boy,this is about my "friends" baiting and whether
or not I was wrong in reacting as I did.

Poof!!!!!...there it goes that BP again :D

Hondo..you got sharked...they baited you, YOU took the bait!!!

You fell for it ....eps if you all know each other, the I am sure you let your views be known... and it doesnt take long to figure out that you have a strong opinion on certain things...

Honestly...you gave them the bullets.....

BTW was there money on the lights or was this just "play play"?

PS...you should be having fun now that you are retired.......chill :D

Ploy

That was an obvious ploy to 'keep you down on the farm' or 'in your place' losing to your friend like you usually do. Even friends get use to a set way of relating and if one of them does something 'out of character', it can upset the boat.

If you were playing for fun, I would slough it off, but if it was for money, I would say good riddance. And Hondo, noone is your friend if they talk bad about you behind your back. Everyone has a tendency to think some people are friends when they are really just acquaintances.

Even the greats can have their concentration disturbed......

The very good golfer Maurice Bembridge (now 'super senior' age but he once held the course record at Augusta) used to be the guy who no other British Pros would play in private big money matches, so he got into the habit of playing good amateurs for cash giving them strokes. Low handicap amateurs with deep pockets or wealthy backers used to travel for miles to take him on.

One day a fellow turned up for their arranged money match, around 5k sterling which in the 1960's was quite a lot of money. This guy was a 4 handicap and Bembridge had agreed to give him all 4 shots match play 18 holes. On the tee the guy makes a proposition to Bembridge.........

"Tell you what Maurice, I don't want the 4 shots, I'll play off scratch if instead you allow me to shout "BOO!!!" at any two times of my choosing during the match, you agree?"

Bembridge thinks to himself that the worst that would mean is the guy distracting him twice and therefore losing two holes which is better than letting him in on 4 holes with 4 strokes, so he agrees.

They go ahead and play. The amateur beats Bembridge 3 and 1 and not even once during the match did he resort to shouting "BOO!!!"
But every time Bembridge was on his backswing his mind was awash with thoughts of this guy being about to shout "BOO!!!" which turned his swing to jelly and his game to ratpoops:)

They knew the buttons, they pushed them, you opted for the nuclear option.....
I would look at this as a lesson, and learn what to do when someone is pushing your buttons to throw you off of your game.
You might try telling yourself that they are scared and trying to rile you, so that must mean you have a serious advantage. You allowed them to take that advantage and turn it into a deficit.
Someone shouldn't be able to push your buttons once you realize what is happening. It's simply a matter of self control.

Congratulate yourself, your superior play turned 2 "friends" into a couple of a$$holes. Learn to use it to your advantage. I once got a guy so off of his game by just playing mine that he smashed his Meucci into kindling when we were done. This was a league match with nothing on the line...He was by far the superior player, and still is, even handicapped, but he got frstrated during the match and it cost him a couple hundred dollars worth of Meucci...

Even worse than losing two friends, now everybody on this message baord knows how to shark you.

:p
I was going to say, a cardinal rule for survival in pooroom culture: Never acknowledge that anything anyone does actually gets to your game -- otherwise it will sooner or later be used against you.

Hondo, Come to the Sport Center. We keep a token minimum wage Republican to be the butt of good natured ribbing. And you can get played.:) :)

Just as long as it is not John Floyd.

Sometimes, when playing with "friends," one is taking it more seriously than the other. I have a practice friend that, on a given day, either one of us can run over the other if we catch that "gear." It's hard to focus when playing with your buds. That is WHY I always advocate a buck or two to make sure both of you are playing serious. Bragging rights is enough for some; but, I like to have free dinner and pool time. If those guys are really friends, they understand how serious it is for you and will respect that. If they don't, get the game a ball in your favor and jack it up! I mean, are these guys you'd go camping with along with your family? If not, they are "poolroom" friends, and there will ALWAYS be more "poolroom" friends. Screw'em.

I pretty much agree with everything you say. Light money
involved but I play just as hard for the heck of it as I do
for money.
