I Love Those Wannabe Bar Hustlers

You walk into a shoe store with $50 and you come out with socks:eek:
Funny you said that. I took the $50 and bought a pair of nice deck shoes. Johnnyt

Johnny...me too, quit drinking. Feel uncomfortable in bars. For me, it's guit...can't even order a soft drink, since diagnosed as diabetic. So..coffee or water. Feel like I'm not paying the tab for being there.

Weird, because in the past, I more than "paid the tab"...

I like to see the loudmouth types knocked down a peg...so I applaud your action in this case.

I know what you mean. When I walked in I ordered a Coke. As I said in another thread I knew the bartender for years. She put a cherry and a stirrer in my Coke and said, "Here ya go sunny". With about a half a dozen at the bar holding in the laugh.

Only thing I could think to say was, Funny you called me Sunny, my Dad use to call me son because I was so bright. Johnnyt

I guess it's just because I've never played with the sole intention of making money. I certainly have never LOOKED for any easy game. I know nothing of the ratings (A, B, C, etc.). All the tourneys I've played in were not handicapped (except one local weekly tourney where 2 guys that play in it go to 5 as opposed to 4 for everyone else). Those two aren't the best players in the area, so I'll guess they are B players; making me a C player or worse....I did take one of 'em down 4-1 (with 3 8ball break and runs) the last time I played in the tourney though.

Ok, now that I'm way off track...let's hear about some more robbing. J/K guys, it was good to see the reasons weren't purely financial (which I also won't knock if that is the only way you make money).

Lol.

Back in the day when I hustled the bars, most all of them knew my drink, a "Ray Special"!LOL . A half a glass of ice with a lime sqeezed over it and topped off with 7up or water and a stir stick served in a rocks glass. I never drank alcohol, but seemed more comfortable looking like I did.

Nice story there Sunny. Brings back memories! LOL

Apparently you had a decent job for income, and just never really needed to make the extra money. Early 80's I was playing music anywhere from 2 nights a week, to 6 nights a week. I made decent money, but I wanted to become a pro pool player. I enjoyed gambling on pool, and would play just about anyone, unless I recognized their photo from a billiard magazine. I figured every dollar I made, got me closer to playing top level pool, and it does help. I didn't bet high like some of the matches today, but I would play $5 a game, or $100 sets with the guys in the bars and pooolrooms. Strip clubs were easy action in most towns. There was nothing wrong with either of these guys challenging the table, and making a few bucks. Nice of JohnnyT to pass a little jelly on too.

Thanks satman, but that was shooter that gave the kid his money back. Johnnyt

Just for the record, altough I don't know why I feel I need to. I never an made atemped on here to say I was not playing pool for money. If a lamb gets in the way...so be it. The guy I beat today was no lamb. And as far as only playing easy games, try Buddy Hall, Allen Hopkins, CM Lee, Mike S, Steve Cook, and many more top name pros I played with a spot of course. I didn't beat many of them even with the spot, but I did get in the ring with them. Johnnyt

After countless hours and hours of practice, I pride myself in finally being able to run a rack of 9 ball somewhat consistently on good days. However, I seldom gamble. Whenever I do, I ALWAYS end up scratching after making the 8 ball :D
It's inevitable. I guess it's just not in my blood to be a money player.

I wasn't saying that folks ONLY play easy marks. It seems that I see a buncha stories on here talking about the whole "hustling" side of the game. How stalling is an art, and it very well may be, but it isn't me at all. I don't need in someones wallet to enjoy a win, and sometimes when I state that I get jumped on. Admittedly I gamble quite a bit now, but I do it to actually get a game. I wanna play the "A" players and most of 'em HAVE TO bet to even care about playing...so be it. I played a barbox champion, his game (10 ball), his table (pretty much literally - his dad owns the poolhall), and was more than willing to pay for the game. I didn't have ANY chance in the game against him, so I just thought what it was worth to me and played him a couple of sets for what I was willing to lose.

I'll stop rambling with one parting thought...if it's "gambling" where's the gamble when you are clearly a major favorite??

I had to stop in a bar today to talk to a friend about something. While I'm sitting at a table with her I'm watching these two guys betting $10 a game 8-ball on the bar box. I would say one guy was a weak "B" and he was spotting the breaks to a weak "C" player. This "C" guy was in no way a threat to run out very often, but still the "B" guy gave him a jelly-rack each time. My way of thinking is if you give him a jelly-rack so he can't run out, the problem is he makes 1 or 2 balls and gives the table back to you with clusters all over the place so you probably can't run out either. If you have the nuts and the guy can't run out often, give him a good rack to spread the balls open for YOU.

I asked if I could play winner and the "B" guy says, " Ten bucks a game". I say, "Oh I thought you were playing for more than that".
He asks how much I wanted to play for. I said race to 3 for $50. He says you're on. I beat him 3-1, running out twice. He paid me and unscrewed. I love finding wannabe hustlers. Johnnyt

i don't like that 1 barrel bull sh1t. i know a guy like that that plays in livermore. it's always like "are you ready for $5 a game?" i don't even see the point he never has more than 10 on him anyway.

just thinking about people like that makes me angry.

ooops

Still a nice gesture, and like I said, if the table is going for $x, and you challenge, don't matter who's playing or how good they are. They don't have to play.

I liked the story.... I like 99% of stories that end up here and this one is no different.

Anyone who plays pool for money is making themselves a target for better players. They prey on weaker players and get preyed on themselves.

It's no fun clubbing baby seals but when they are paying you to club them then at least you can go do something fun with the money.

P.S. Strip Clubs are sometimes GOLD MINES!!!

Good Shark Proofing Too!

Some of the first places that let me in when I was fifteen were the topless joints. Some had the tables in a side room, some had them in the same room as the stage. When I got to where that background scenery or playing a knock out in g-string and pasties didn't distract me I was pretty well shark proof!

I can't remember if I was working for 50 or 75 cents an hour tax free at the time but I can say that the kind patrons of the topless joints that had challenge tables financed a lot of this young man's partying.
