I miss OLDHASBEEN

I think OLDHASBEEN might have been the coolest AZB'er ever. I was reading through some of his old posts the other day and getting misty eyed. That guy always had something GOOD to contribute! He wasn't "a" character, he was full "of" character.

Just thinking out loud.

The best one was when he said he used to stand in the toilet to cool his feet down. OMG I'm telling gunny this as I'm reading it,,,, cause Tom would never lie, and Gunny is just laughing and laughing and laughing.
OMG it was the best thread to read,,,, he was one of the good guys
and he should be missed.
hugs

(u should come play with gunny,,,, he needs a mental break holiday from the crap we are going thru now).

Tell Gunny I'll try to give him a call tonight.

My wife was in Grand Caiman this week for a work trip (gets back tomorrow night) so I've been having a daddy/daughter week which means no pool...LOL.

He won the Missouri state 9 ball championship not long before died. Pretty strong for a guy who wasn't in the best of health.

What a great story that was about OHB winning the tournament. He won it the first time in '82 and then won it again nearly 25 years later. Here is a quote from OHB shortly after he won the tournament...

"Thanks for all the congrats.
Chuck Raulston was about all I could handle (and almost didn't) after playing 10 hours on Saturday & 13 hours on Sunday. What a gentleman to compete against and NO, I don't want to play him anymore. I think that is what surprised me the most. The fact that I could still hold up for that long.
Phil Spudich, his lovely wife and the entire staff at Rack & Roll, ARE what is still great about Pool. The conditions, equipment, food and pool fans made this a tournament I will never forget.
My Wife (who was with me when I won the First Missouri State Championship back in '82) couldn't believe it when I called on my way home with the news. She said she was glad that I could still do "Some Things" the same way I did in '82 because she knew of quite a few I couldn't still do quite as well.
AND THAT JUST CONFIRMS THAT I'M STILL AN - "OLDHASBEEN"."

What a character that guy was. We've lost some great people from the board and Tom was top shelf in everyway. Very disappointed that I never got the opportunity to meet him.

I was in Columbia, MO when he won the 9 ball tourney and posted the results and then a few days later linked to an article from the STL Post about him.

He PM'd me wondering if we knew each other, we didn't.

I told him I just enjoyed reading his post and admired his pool history.

We happened to be friends of friends and I was always bugging him with "did you know" questions. Of course he always answered.

To this day, I have 2 PM's that he sent me and I refuse to delete them. They are from February, 2005, less than 2 months before he left us.........

Yeah, I think Tom won it first in 1982 and then again in 2005. Only two times he showed up.

[sorry DeadPoked, missed your post before I posted mine]

No problem, Doc. I forgot that he only played twice. Even more amazing.

Tom was very sick and dieing of cancer when he won it the second time. How big of a heart did that guy show????

Yep, OHB was the man, period! He could talk the talk, and walk the walk. Anyone remember that picture he posted of himself on that scooter riding down the street with a dog in the front basket I think. Now that was funny. Who would have ever thought that guy was a 9 ball Champion and pool hustler..LOL.

In memory of OHB...

Waaaaaaay Back in the early '60's (hippy days) I used to play all the time in bare feet. I loved it. There was something about it that made me more energetic and quick. During long sessions back then, I would take a break and wash my face, hands and put my foot (one at a time) into the toilet and flush. It was very refreshing and I could play for hours that way.
Way later in life, I told Louie about this because he sometimes would be playing for days on end. After a couple of days (in the same shoes and socks), there could be an odor. He liked the idea so much that he started doing it even when only playing for 6 or 8 hours.
Now I just wear NB walking shoes - and not for long.

OHB and I were the organizers of the first AZB room at DCC, 3 years ago. It was a great pleasure working with him the several months it took to get it all together. Though he was very ill, he had a tremendously positive outlook on life; and I was very impressed by how he dealt with a very bad break.

He and I had planned a straight pool match for some decent stakes; but he was too sick to play that year (chemotherapy is a b$tch). He passed away soon after......some day maybe we'll play in a different venue.
