I'm making a cue for a guy who wants a white handle and black forearm and buttsleeve. I have some nice black ebony, but I'm not sure what to use for the white handle. I thought about holly, but I don't know anything about that wood. I have seen it in some cues that look fantastic though. Any suggestions?

If u can get some black and white ebony that would look cool as well.

There are some Goncalo Alves turning squares available in another thread that show a lot of light/white sapwood with some black streaks - I thought they were white w/black ebony when I first saw them.

Another idea for you to kick around with your customer.

I have curly american ash. The graining in American ash is not gray like european ash, it is yellowish, with the early growth pretty white. Being curly (not extreme, but it will show up nicely when finished) the material is a bit rare for American ash.

Cored holly would be your best way to go. If you don't have a means to core it, I would think Cue Components or maybe Prather would sell you a piece already cored.
 
Unless the guy specifically wants bright white, bland wood, i'd stay away from holly as a major component. Kelly's curly ash sounds really nice. I have a few pieces and know exactly what he's talking about. It's nice. Otherwise, some nice white curly or birds eye maple is likely what he means by "white" wood. I have had lots of guys ask for "white" wood through the years & what they meant was maple, not actually something snow white. You should clarify it with him before building the cue.

How about white acrylic stuff that looks like corian?
Same ones used by Mali for collars and plates.
 
Thanks for the advice fellas. It has to be white so I think I'm gonna try some faux ivory or maybe that acrylic Joey mentioned. The reason it has to be white is because he is a member of an organization that happens to wear leather vests and their colors are black and white. Black and maple won't work, its gotta be bright white.

Just my opinion but I prefer to use wood. I think this is the way to go. but like I said JMHO. :thumbup:
 
I have a piece of ivory wood,west Penn sells it, its pretty white and it is not expensive. I've used it and it finishes well.
