I play better

There I said it! I play much better with noise canceling ear buds and good music. At least when I am practicing. I could not imagine playing someone while privately listening to music (sorry too old school).

I am not sure why but my suspicions are that the tunes keep me from over thinking the shots and I just play. Brain sits on the side and memory and body takes over.

I don't know if others notice this or not but this does not happen to me with normal home or pool room speakers.

gotta be the right music

It has to be the right kind of music. Load up the juke box with fifties and early sixties country with a little mo-town and rock'n'roll up to the early seventies and I'm liable to have a flashback and kick it into overdrive.

A chuckle about music, back when I had to take a dozen tough certification tests I would put in thirty or forty hours studying but then the morning of the test I was done studying, I just wanted to zone out on the way to the testing center. He isn't my all time favorite to listen to although certainly a favorite but careful charting of who I listened to and how I scored showed I scored highest listening to Johnny Cash. That's why when I was facing the toughest tests I always cranked Johnny on the forty-five minute to hour ride in. Worked, I snuck by all the tests on the first try!

When I think about it, it's really hard to beat good buckle polishing music to play pool to.

I wear my musicians ear plugs when I play. I can still hear people talking and the background noise, but it all just sounds like very quiet background noise. It definitely helps me concentrate.

i have no less than 20 pairs of headphones...lol....not even kidding....its an addiction of mine that i have just recently kicked...:D

anyway, my noise cancelling earbuds work great except for when you are moving around. (very noisy when the bud moves in your ear)

my noise cancelling 'cans' work great when you are moving but look silly cuz they are so big...

whatever shall I do?? lol

you're right, the music keeps you from overthinking the shot(s). the headphones put the sound on your minds 'main stage', (as opposed to background music), forcing your mind to dig deep for a quiet place to concentrate.

some call this 'zen'

if you've seen the movie "Bruce Almighty", think of the music as your minds way of mopping the floor with morgan freeman.

on netflix dvd

I knew the movie existed but heard the song just the other day while working. Now I need to find the movie;).

The movie is called "The Baron and the Kid". It isn't available for instant watch but you can rent the DVD from NetFlix if you subscribe or know somebody that does. I caught part of it on TV awhile back but no idea what channel or network it was on.

Not pool related but country singers acting, Marty Robbins starred in two truly awful westerns. He was great in interviews, just fine in smaller parts, I think feeling like he had to carry the movie destroyed him trying to act when he was the star. I'd still like to have them, admired a lot of things about Marty.

On the flip side, music that you're not a fan of can be really detrimental. I made a playlist of the 10-15 songs my repeat gambling opponent favors and practiced while blasting it at home. I finally played at my potential at our last match up :)

I have a few army mental issues so playing with head phones is a no brainer when im playing pool im anti social. When im not playing im pretty much easy going and frendly

I have a pair of Bose earbuds that I use. Use them in tournies and other matches. Most times your opponent or the TD wont have a problem with them as long as it doesnt cause an issue. I know some tournies and leagues will not allow them though.

When it comes to music I like to listen to one particualr artist at a time. I hate a random shuffle of different artists or genres...

Been listening a lot to this lately while playing:

Very nice mellow beats. The singers are great and the lyrics are good and humorous a little. Plus disc two is all the beats (instrumental).

Most leagues any tourneys do not allow the use of earpieces, unless they are hearing aids!

I tried this for the first time a while back in a 9-ball tournament. Stevie Ray Vaughn, Eric Clapton and Jimmy Hendrix helped me cruise right through the bracket.......And the wind cries Mary....

I will build a playlist of the songs that make me play good and then random that list but the songs must the type that don't irritate me
