if everyone just used their real names on the forum's and chat's...

wouldn't the pool community and support be more easily recognizable and unified if we all used our actual names on forums, chats, live stream, etc? I know it sounds funny coming from "the77club" because that is my business name, but my website and phone number are attached. It just makes me wonder when "spacecowboy"" says they were at Turning Stone event and I think, "wow, I was there too" I wonder who it is?? I also think it would slow down any bashing and animosity if someone actually had to reveal themselves....I try and do my best to support pool, live streams, players, pool rooms, cue makers, etc...why not put my name on it? It just seems like it would help identify who is in this with me, instead of this anonymous support...just a thought....peace..

Some of us do use our real names. So........even knowing my real name, you probably don't have a clue who I am. I'm just a nobody from Tucson Arizona. I just love hittn' balls into the rails and sometimes I'm surprised when a pocket gets in the way.

I kinda agree with what Geno implies. Pick a screen name that you will not be embarrassed to hear if someone yelled at you from across a crowded bar. Stick with it and let your friends know. Now you can be known, act like an idiot at times and still preserve your identity for those time where it really matters.

Something like selecting a tattoo. Is this something you will want to show your children when you are 45 years old?

this thread was running a little late

According to my schedule listing such things this thread was due to come up again two months ago. There are many good reasons for not using your real name. One being, yes your present or potential employer may well google your name when they are bored. You may not want them in your private life just on general principles.

There is another issue too, tempers sometimes run hot on the internet. A friend doesn't use his real name because he had somebody show up on his doorstep after an internet argument. A couple more have been physically stalked. I'm not really hard to find but if you show up on my doorstep I want to know you went to some effort. Somebody an hour away from me was making threats right here on this forum. I want to know that he went to some effort to find me so I can judge how to react if he does.

There is another thing, I use Hu everywhere I go on the Internet and have since the 1980's. If I wanted to hide on the net using my real name would be the best way to do it. Hu stands for something everywhere I go. Likewise, when I'm playing pool I simply give my name as Hu, even signing in at tournaments. That has been true for over four decades. Quite simply, anybody that doesn't know me as Hu doesn't know me although most I meet face to face don't know how I spell it.

I have two things to say concerning this subject.

1. Some of the screen names are un-yellable. "HEY JID63_IBmer!!!" It just doesn't flow. I think people should keep this in mind when making up a name.

2. My screen name doesn't embarrass me. People introducing me as so-and-so from the forums... that embarrasses the $hit out of me.

Unless it's Melinda who can do whatever she wants.

As I posted in a similar thread last year:

Anonymous posting can facilitate discussion or exchange of information based on what is said rather than who says it. We all tend to view another person’s words and actions through filters. The filters are the preconceptions and prejudices formed by our prior knowledge of that person or other persons with similar characteristics – age, sex, race, nationality, wealth, income, marital status, family history, occupation, avocations, height, weight, and on and on. But with anonymous posting, one’s words have to be evaluated solely in terms of the quality of the thought and expression.

Over time, of course, an anonymous poster creates a posting history or profile that, in itself, creates preconceptions and prejudices that filter what that person subsequently posts.

Obviously, it can be useful to know who the poster is when trying to evaluate the accuracy, wisdom, or credibility of what he is saying. But for most topics, that’s not essential. Whether the poster is Joe Championplayer, Joe Supercuebuilder, or Joe Shmoe, let’s evaluate what is said rather than who says it.

Well said, I just spent 15 minutes trying say that and finally gave up. I just don't have the gift.

I believe that people are more respectful when they know they are dealing with a real person over a created persona.

One good reason for having it voluntary is who's to say that one persons possible contribution is more valid or less valid based simply on who they are.
Blackjack, Jay, Freddy and others do have great information to contribute on the forums and their names help in that assessment at times, however, there are other very well known people in the billiards world who can't string a thought together. At the same time there are people who are just "Bud Smith from Hicksville" types who can and do contribute greatly. If we went strictly by using names and Efren started posting we would all feel the urge to become hero worshiping yes men (and women).

I am a wannabe...or maybe that's a "could a been" that opted NOT to go on the road many years ago with 3 of the best hustlers to ever live. I walked away and don't have the option of playing much anymore but I do enjoy the forums including the arguments. I, just like Hu prefer not to advertise to those I may occasionally (or often even) offend.:grin-square:

EDIT: Oh yes and then there is always what Pushout gave as a reason.......yes I have heard!

It would also slow down some of the "keyboard commandos" who are always looking to argue, condemn others, and act as baddasses, saying things they'd never say to anyone face to face for fear of having their face rearranged!

I do not usually argue with people on the internet or in person, but I am the opposite of most of the dorks I see on the internet. I would be more likely to say something in person rather then on the internet.

It is funny to watch some of the argumentative people on here. Even if they win an argument, which is tough to do, they are still getting laughed at by most people. Trust me, I see a bunch of idiots on this site everyday. I think it is just better to stay out it. If you can think of ten big arguments that you have been into on this forum, then there is probably something wrong with you.

For what it's worth, everyone, at least English speakers, calls me Mully or Mullyman. Last name is Mullins. If you ever need to pick me out of a crowd look for a Bengals jersey.
MULLY

Also ,even if someone uses their name how do you REALLY know.

Jay Helfert could really be Fred Flintstone (no,no it is Jay) for example.

Still Terry

Well, I saw Jay's picture and I thought it was Fred Flintstone. At least from the same era anyway.

You can have different names. Use your own and post with civility  and another to post what you really think.:(

Aaaah Flame War Fast Larry. Someone got caught up with him and punched him out.

Not ananymous enough.

The point is, FL is a certified nut case. I used my full name on rsb years ago before I knew what he was capable of. He's not the only nut case out there. There are people here who know my real name because I choose to let them know it. It's my choice, if it weren't, I probably wouldn't be here.
