If you were creating your own forum..

I'll try once again with this paste of an earlier forum post.

I'd like an entire area dedicated to the newer and less experienced player. That way if someone wants to help out on the basics he can at his own choosing. It also eliminates the "Not this again" responses and also makes a lesser skilled player feel more at ease about asking questions they feel may be redundant. Often times the search feature leaves something to be desired.

Great suggestions. Along this line....maybe a cyber house pro or two that can help new players with questions from time to time.

I wouldn't let anybody, and I mean ANYBODY on my forum call another member a disparaging name. I would be quick and unrelenting with the "ban-hammer", only I'd start with the bans at a time limit of 1 week and graduate up from there. Maybe go from a week to a month, to six months, to a year, and then goodbye forever (depending on the severity of the name-calling, then maybe not be THAT lenient).

You'd have to have good mods to help keep track of some things, such as this.

Make it clear that a three year old thread has been bumped so we don't respond like idiots who thought it was new.

I'd get rid of the invisible function. WTF, if your not man enough to stand up for what your doing and saying you need to be invisible. JMO!

2 different AZ Billiards

I would split Azbilliards into 2 sites.

AzbilliardsAmerica and Azbilliardsinternational or like Azjapan/Azcananda/Azeurope/Azchina and so on.

This being said all products made in America are sold in America and All products made elsewere stay there also as the foreign made products and sellers enjoy getting premium American dollars made from cheap labor and pay the United states government no taxes. If the foreign countrys make such nice products then sell them in their own countrys and make a living there or move to the usa and pay taxes to America.

If you were creating your own forum.. what would you do the same, differently?

I can speak to this by 1st hand experience. To start with, if you think you will replace AZB, forget it immediately. AZB is a very diverse site covering Pool, MOST of it! The member base is huge, and dedicated, and that is good for Pool I believe. Pretty much any topic pool related has been discussed here, repeatedly in most cases, so why would people need, or want, another forum. I set my site up to offer things that either are not available here, or that someone started and eventually abandoned, or as a place that helps to answer questions that are asked repeatedly by newer users that maybe won't search for the answers or are just not aware of how to. It is more of a service to the pool community than anything else. The thing with forums is a low percentage of visitors sign up, and a very low percentage of the signups actually post and contribute to the community. I get alot of traffic for the 9 months I've been online, but not so many signups. People will go there to find info about Cuemakers in my Cuemakers Directory, or watch videos, or check out the new Poolroom Directory I'm working on, but very few will actually take the 2 minutes to sign up and support the efforts it takes to build that stuff, but without some reason for them to go there, they just won't, but that's fine, it was built as a service to the Pool community, just as AZB was in it's early days, and was never meant to replace anything. It is merely another place for poolplayers to check out if they wish. Long story short,,,,,,don't try and replace whats already here and very popular,,,,,,,there is no need, AZB is already a very good forum, which is why we are all here, so if you can't find a needed service to offer it may or may not be worth your effort. I do what I do because I love it, hell I don't even try to sell ads,,,, there is information there that helps people I know, because I recieve PM's and emails from people who are grateful for what I'm doing.

I add forums as the membership requests them,,,,,,,,the problem is there is always a certain amount of internet pool sharks who can't wait to try and exude superiority over newer members, or beginning players.
A possible solution is to setup Member Clubs with private forums,,,,,,easily doable.

Great suggestions. Along this line....maybe a cyber house pro or two that can help new players with questions from time to time.

Not a bad idea,,,,or maybe get a couple of guys, like Scott Lee, or Randy G,,,,whoever, to monitor a private Member Club and offer useful information. Again, easily doable.

I have a warning system in place, 3 and out,,,,,,but never had to use it.

You'd have to have good mods to help keep track of some things, such as this.

Every member could be a mod if the "report this post" function was used properly.

Very True!

Make it possible to pull up all new threads except NPR.

Ah, NPR,,,,,,,do those guys play pool? LOL

I'd never go that far!

Definitely keep NPR

Why all the bashing of NPR? Obviously lots of people like it and enjoy it.

If you are not interested in NPR, ignore it.

NPR serves a vitally important function: it keeps all those arguments from clogging up the main page!!!

I would add:
  • a table mechanics contact database,
  • a pool hall database, by city and state,
  • a custom cue maker database,
  • a production cue manufacturer database,
  • a table manufacturer database.
I would also add a 'Lab test" database, where equipment could be tested and results shown.

I have no intention of replacing anything, yet merely adding a resource to the billiard community. I'm also not ad driven, as there are no ads on my site, so I'm not trying to steal revenue. Most billiard forums I've been to are for the most part about buying and selling customs, used items, and are very specifically against dealers stealing the show. The forum I am building is specifically designed around billiard dealers. It has a section for dealers to post their wares, and a section for used items where no dealers are allowed. I'm not recreating craigslist or Az, just adding a place for businesses like mine to have a home in the forum format. If someone wants a custom cue, the all come to AZ.. and if someone even mentions a production cue, they get slammed..hard. So, I'm "adding to" the community a place where Production cues, cases and equipment are the focus.
Yes, anyone can go to their respective websites and see everything they have, but with a forum enviroment that we are all comfortable with, where you can actually talk to someone.. Thats a plus.

I like most of the ideas I've seen so far, but Chopdoc is responsible for the dancing girls and beer..

That is EXACTLY why you have an NPR section....

I can't see another pool forum trumping AzBilliards for industry, leagues, players, et cetera.

Most other so-called "pool forums," whether open or closed, moderated or not moderated, seem to discuss AzBilliards activities, much more so than any new pool-related topics.

People will come here to AzBilliards first and then check out their respective closed and/or unmoderated forums so they have something to talk about.

That said, good luck to you. You might want to contact the BCA where all the industry members seem to hang out.
