I finally realized that I don't like playing pool with other people. I would rather keep to myself and play 14.1, and never have to sit down. My goals for pool are completely personal.

Does anyone else feel this way?

Aw, come on nrhoades, no one likes to play with themselves. Excuse me, I mean no one doesn't like to play with themselves.
Wait a minute. Playing with yourself is not right.
Dammit!
I think you'll have to work this one out for yourself. :)

I am in complete agreement. I generally only play with others if it is tourney/ $/ or theworst: friends.
you fukcers know who you are.

I totally understand & was just trying to explain it to the retired gentleman that I have been helping.

When I play, I'm not really playing my opponent. I'm playing against myself within the game. My opponent is just there & I hope doing the same thing but I doubt it.

That is the beauty of the game. It is similiar to golf, where one can play against the course & a par score or bowling.

Who else out there really understands this or is it all about the money & bragging rights?

Best Regards,

I dont prefer to, but I don't mind playing by myself..

I like to play against top players. It gives me experience playing under pressure, but when I can't i prefer to play by myself. Although that doesn't stop me from playing with people that ask me to. It's for the same reason mentioned. I like to continuously play, don't like to sit down. Although I seem to do plenty of that when I'm playing top players...lol.

Most pool players, like artists and musicians are a little wierd, its just when you stop missing the wierdness seems to be accepted, but your still the same person. Pool is a great way to get lost and detached from life for a bit, till ya miss a hangar....:)

I like to pound people. I hate playing by myself.
Playing with myself some days isnt so bad ;)

Most of the time I prefer having the table to myself...but that's because I'm new to pool and other players don't think it's much fun to shoot drills :)

I'm the same way. I could practice and hit balls for hours and hours. Kinda get a bit disappointed when someone asks to play. Haha Prolly just don't like to sit there and watch them run rack after rack from my chair.

How new to the game are you? I never did do & still do not do 'drills'. I've coached all of the major sports & nothing beats 'real' or simulated real play. I would rather play the game against myself than do drills. Unless you have already identified a deficiency & want to work in out.

Just my $0.02

Best Regards,

I must be weird also.. I love going in to the pool room and get into my own little world pocketing ball after ball, trying to beat my personal best in straight or just run out 9/10 ball racks. I get bored playing someone over and over, win or lose. I do enjoy playing tournaments though.

Hi Rick,

I've been playing for 11 months.

50% of the time I play another player.
40% of the time I play against myself (because I bore quickly of drills and practice)
10% of the time I do drills.

I think I should do more drills...but I do get bored easily. Straight-in stop shot drill helps me work on developing a straight stroke. Drills also help me remember "when I do this, this happens". For me, that takes repetition.

Hell is other pool players, but I think safety battles in 14.1 are really fun/interesting and you miss that if you just shoot by yourself.

Whenever I have a chance I love to play on my own, to be correct, practice alone. I can shoot the same one shot for 5 hours until I never miss it, so when it comes up in the game, no matter how hard it is I just nail it like it was a hanger.
Too bad I almost never get a chance to practice. I play in a league, but I noticed that without practice my game doesn't improve, that's why any chance I get I will choose practice alone vs playing someone.
There's a 7(apa skill level) on my team that plays all the time and he tells me- no, you gotta play for money, tournaments all the time, that's how you get better.
He was a 7 ten years ago and had been shooting pool for over 30 years so his game obviously doesn't improve. I don't want to get stuck as a 7 , 6, or whatever the case maybe for years on end.
That's why I practice every chance I get and everyone, including myself could tell me that my game improves.
Now I shoot WAY BETTER than I shot a month ago, a month ago I shot WAY BETTER than I shot two month ago,etc..., and it keeps on going, because I believe in practice and even 4-5 hours a week make it possible.
When I just play against someone, I don't see improvement. At least at my level where I am at now.

Unless very evenly matched - both in terms of skill level and getting-the-hell-on-with-it-already - I also prefer to play alone. I find most players interminable to play against, and lose concentration/interest in the game very quickly.

When I was new I loved shooting alone and could do whatever without getting bored of it.
After a few years I think it wears off for most people.
Wish I could get back some of that urge.

If you don't lose your taste for it, you're lucky.
