Impossible position shot?

The 8 ball is a ball's width or less from the point. You want to follow the CB to the side rail and back to the opposite rail for ideal position on the 9.

Using only follow, do you think it's possible to go one rail (and one rail only) such that the CB reaches the opposite rail at point A?

If you have a table, try it out and post your results.

CueTable Help

To have the cue ball come back this short, it looks to me like a lot of right is needed, else it banks longer. (Especially if it's a Diamond Pro Am!)

Just hit it with follow and the CB comes to that point. Super said it best... it's a hanger.

I think a better approach is for you to tell us how you play it and what your results are. That way, we can help.

This can only be done on a very very fast table. It cannot be hit with high english. The hit must be center or below and hit softly with right.

I have tried it and I know my results.

I challenge you to try it on your table. ;)

That's not the issue. The issue is using follow. When the rail is this close, the cueball will continue to slide after contact with the object ball as it's hitting the rail. This is what makes this position play VERY difficult. You need bouncy rails and old cloth. Table conditions will play heavily on whether or not this route is possible.

Yes, table conditions have a significant impact when interacting with rails.

Cloth: Humidity will slow the CB down, and make the OBs clingy. Dryness will speed things up.
Rails: Heat will make the rubber soft, and cold will make the rubber stiff.

Not just the table conditions, but the CB also.
Red circle CB, Weighted bar table CB, Oversized bar table CB, etc...?

But based on the diagram, as long as you are playing on decent playing equipment. It's not impossible. It may be necessary to use a little left english to shorten up the rebound....and/or maybe cheat the pocket a little.

The biggest concern might be skidding or english reversal. This shot would need a good stroke, but overstroking will cause very undesirable results.

Hit it at warp speed enough to allow the spin to take :D

I would prefer to just half it with right and go two rails....

Or cheat the pocket, thin it and go one rail....

Or I guess you could draw it a bit.....

I don't have a table at work so I have to guess :D

It's a stroke-testing shot. It reminds me of the shot where if you were shooting the 8 from the same position, but you wanted the cue ball to end up where the 9 is sitting. At first, you might try to blast the shot mach 10 with a lot of high inside, but you may never make it past the side pocket.

Key to the shot is a smooth stroke, hit with just enough top such that the cue ball is rolling naturally again by the time it hits the first rail. Otherwise the follow will grab after you hit the rail, and you'll end up short.

Looks like you can really cheat the pocket--use the absolute softest stroke you think will get the cb to the other side and use a little right.

I think the only thing i worry about on a shot like this is overstroking it and having the cue ball do a loopdy loop and basically hanging around and hugging the side pocket without ever leaving. The shot would be much MUCH harder on new cloth because of that.
Old cloth is easy. You just hit it.

Agree 100%.......

Not a difficult shot, hair above center with some right and you're there.

Russ....

It can be done consistently without sidespin, but it isn't simple. The OB has to be hit very precisely, almost dead full to avoid all but the tiniest carom, which is exaggerated because the shot also must be hit firmly to get the CB back across the table on follow alone.

Fast cloth would be a little better because you wouldn't have to hit quite as hard, keeping the carom to a minimum. It has to be aimed very precisely either way.

Doesn't seem that difficult. Granted I haven't tried it on new cloth. I'm hitting about a tip and half above center no side.
