Insidepool Coverage of the World 14.1

I don't know how much AccuStats pays out in royalties but they do pay. I witnessed a few players being paid and have had a brief discussion with Pat about it. As far as the details of who and how that came about, they're between AccuStats and the players.

Is there something wrong with paying royalties to players for selling their matches to the public? I would think that's the obvious thing to do, even if it's just a token, at least it's something.

If the dvds are causing a bloodbath in losses, then why not leave the matches online for free for a period of time instead of gong through the trouble of production costs to manufacture, sell and ship the dvds? Isn't that simple cost accounting?

RANDY GOLDWATER-

Bravo, Randy..... you are indeed THE guy responsible getting 14.1 back on the road again ..... and I don't think that you get enough credit for that. Darren's run of 200 couldn't have happened without your idea and initiative. Thorsten made a fitting tribute to you in his acceptance speech reminding us all of that and I wholeheartedly agree.

I remember the wasteland that was straight pool in most of the rest of the country until the first tournament and you are so right. We have come so far. So many great champions playing the game we love, and it all started with Randy Goldwater the first year and you, Dr. Fedak in subsequent years. Thanks for all that you do.

Good point. Why even bother with DVD's? Aren't the kids all downloading .mp3 files for 99 cents a song or something like that? There wouldn't be any production costs over what it took to capture the match if you just put them online to download. Sell them for something affordable and people will buy them.

Nothing wrong with paying royalties. This is not peculiar to straight pool. You could have started a thread in the main forum if it was something you wanted to espouse, rather than raining on our parade in the straight pool sub-forum.

Ask yourself what do the three threads you have recently been contributing to in the 14.1 sub-forum have in common?

And when was the last time before these three threads that you contributed to our forum?

You are wrong about Fran starting 3 threads here. She only started 1.

KollegeDave started this *****fest.

"Pearls before swine" and "casting pearls" refer to a quotation from Matthew 7:6 in Jesus's Sermon on the Mount, implying that you should not put what is valuable in front of those who will reject the notion that it has value and furthermore that they will seek to diminish or destroy what you offer.
"Do not give what is holy to the dogs; nor cast your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you in pieces."

Royalties

I did commentary for that tournament two years back, and I can tell you for certain that commentators did not get one dime. With Charlie at the helm, you can be pretty sure that the players didn't either. Can't say the same about Accu-Stats, because I have no personal knowledge as to whether they do or do not. But as Fran says, it would make sense that they get SOMETHING. GF

Thank you for that elegant comment:

I only started something. You've brought us in from the wilderness.

I may have done it the first 2 years ;)

The Good Dr. Gets credit for seeing the project through and making sure straight pool is played in all 4 corners of the world. My contributions pale in comparison to what he's accomplished.

I was the person responsible for resurrecting the world straight pool championships back in 2006. Financially, the Dvd's were a disaster.

Randy Goldwater

Too bad - I purchased 2 of the dvds and they were great - thanx for the resurrection

And here's the irony of it all: If Charlie Williams was still heading up a players' association instead of promoting an event, he would never have allowed the event to happen without a media rights agreement on behalf of the players.

Even if the players didn't each get royalties in a particular event, the media rights fee would go to their association which is supposed to be designed to be actively involved in protecting the rights of the players, for example: making sure that events are run fairly among a list of other things.

Without representation, the players will just keep signing waiver after waiver, giving away their rights to event promoters.

And that's Charlie's fault?

Why don't you get off the couch if you're so concerned? Everything I've ever done for pool was for the players benefit. And it was all done with no expectation of profit. You're whining about player representation when the players have proven, year after year, decade after decade, they can't unite. They can't see the forest from the trees and when push comes to shove, look out only for themselves. That's why pool players unions have historically failed. And you should now better.

So you edit ! Nice.
Oh Dennis you are very welcome that I corrected you.

Why don't we all put our tax returns up on here so we can see who is allowed to throw the stones.
Dr Good too !

My point was if Charlie was responsible here, like others are saying, then he knows better because he's been on the other side of this.

So what's the solution? Are you saying that they're a hopeless, selfish bunch so everyone might as well take what they can from them?

I've done a fair share of contributing off the couch ---- I think I've got that pretty well covered to qualify my stating my opinion here.

What the F is your problem?????

of course I edited. You pointed out a mistake that I had made and I corrected it. It certainly did not change the gist of my point. The two threads she did not start she "contributed" heavily to.

Someone starts a thread about hoping to see the Straight Pool Videos and all of a sudden we need to talk about whether players get royalties? These are the pearls you are referencing that are being shown to us swinish straight pool fans.

I respectfully suggest that you and your ilk are in the wrong sub forum.

We like straight pool. End of Story.

Walsh, how do you know what I like ?

Maybe I used to like some of you now !

Disrespect gets you nowhere.

As an "Accustats Affiliate" can you shed some light on the issue of the royalties, if any, Pat pays out?

No, sorry I cannot. I help them from afar and do not know these things.

But I do believe the real issue here is CW/DP.

Their pockets get filled first and foremost !

Well all this talk reminds me that I had purchased all 5 DVD's from the 2006 event for I think $10 total. There was a special I saw advertised on the AZ homepage a year or two ago. I wasn't even into straight pool then, but decided to get them just for the hell of it. I had been at that event in person so I thought it would be nice to have the DVD's, but only because they were so cheap. I suspect whoever made the DVD's was just blowing them out at that price because they were not selling at all at the original price. (pure speculation on my part).

Anyway, I think I will rip open the shrink wrap and pop one in my DVD player today, as Straight Pool is now my new favorite game:)

Excellent! Somebody is actually talking about Straight Pool on this forum.

There is some very good pool in that set. While probably not the best match, take a look at the Engert/Robles match. I love the rhythm of Thomas Engert during that match. Sometimes, you can watch a match and copy the rhythm when you next get back to the table. Give it a look.
