International Open 9-Ball 2024, St. Augustine, FL, Nov. 18-22

From the American 14..1 Straight Pool Championship website (https://americanstraightpool.com/) it looks like they are hoping for 49 players and have already invited 44. Maybe it's "open" to fill any spots not taken by the invited players. And, yes, I think there was some minor last-day overlap in the past, but they were flexible enough to not let that eliminate anyone.
Kind of strange they list Dennis Orcullo. Isn't he still banned from the US? They also have Schmidt and Shaw listed right next to each other. I would think it unlikely John will show up.

I think there is a little confusion on the website side of things. Peter has always invited players and things are different with Pat running the event this year. Here is the page of confirmed players for the open, semi-pro and 14.1 events. This was current as of early this week.

I have this in as a visit. Been doing a lot of work around Jaxonville and hopefully can find a work reason to go down for a free trip LOL

I had figured that 650 is the max for an amateur these days. What's Joey Korsiak's Fargo? He's considered a semi-pro if that's the speed they are aiming for. Or is it strictly just an amateur event?
There's a growing problem with the Fargo cut off line. @sjm has it calculated correctly. The 650 line is just too low. What are the players between 650-725 supposed to do in our present pool environment? They can't legitimately compete on the professional stage. They are AT LEAST 100 points below the favorites in a truly professional field. They have zero chance to cash. They should therefore be considered for amateur or "semi-pro" fields. I get it though -- it makes it harder to fill up the fields if these good AMATEUR players are allowed to play.

Pool purgatory is quickly being filled up with the souls that are stuck between 650 and 725 Fargo or so.

Pool Purgatory deserves its own thread but ain't nobody got time for that.

What's funny is -- if you keep your head down and your yap shut -- you can be well into the 700's and play quietly in the APA and cleanup in your area year after year. But you probably won't be able to play in a lot of the weekly tourneys and you'll almost never be able to play in the Fargo capped events. Kind of funny.

If the amateur event is intended to fill as surely as possible, a lower cap is better. There are a lot more players between 550 and 650 than 620 and 720. A main goal is to get bodies into the hotel.

I get that's the main goal most of the time.

I think the better path forward for the amateur events is a light handicap with a higher Fargo cap of around 725. 1 game per 100 points and I think you get the same level of interest without sticking it to your good to great amateurs. Otherwise, you're just kicking the can down the road and in year two, no 520 is going to want to play in a field full of 650's.

He has added both a banks and 1P mini event...
