Is Mika Currently The Best Rotation Pool Player On The Planet?

What does gambling have to do with anything? It pales in comparison to winning a big event (which requires defeating numerous opponents over the course of several days). If you lose a set at gambling, you just post and play another. The better player for that day wins, rather than the most consistent.

(not saying money sets arent good either...im just saying that a single set for 10k proves nothing)

easy there cowboy. I just asked if he would play them for that much.

He has not been afraid to play anyone when he has been in the Philippines so far, and I know that he was working on a race to 100 in 10-ball against Shane Van Boening, but that fell apart for some reason.

It was first scheduled to be played in May I believe, then in November, but as of now, it is not going to happen. Don't know why.

so do you think he would play either of them even for that much?

Oh sorry man. I didn't mean to come off in any negative way at all. My apologies if it seemed as such.

I was just trying to point out that Mika's failure to play big money sets should not be perceived as a weakness in his game. It's just not his interest, and he makes up for it in other areas. I mean he does gamble, but I can't recall him ever playing for any massive sums.

IF he had a backer, like the Filipinos, he probably would play for amounts like that. The difference is that when I have seen him play in Manila (short sets just to get in stroke to the tournament, not long grinding sessions at nights) he has played sets for $ 500 - $ 1000, on his own money.

Wouldn't we all play the Filipinos for 10k if we had a backer? :D

The Lion...

You can take every single name posted in this thread and line them up... Watch them crumble before "The Lion"...

Any reports on how Mika did in his matchups in the Philippines?

If someone can think of a better player in the past 2 years, please post their resumes and we can discuss it. In my opinion, Mika is the hottest player of the decade. His achievements will be the mark of greatness for players to come for a very long time. I've played and watched a lot of great players, none had the pocketing prowess of Mika Immonen. In my opinion, he's the most talented pocketer in the world and has an incredible stroke to boot. It's so difficult to criticize or justify his thought process because he's simply playing with entirely different shot-making percentages than anyone is used to seeing.

We're simply going to have to wait until he cools off to really get a sense of how he stacks up historically but there is no doubt in my mind that he will go down as one of the ten best players in the history of pool.

I 100% respect your opinion, BUT I'm going to have to respectfully disagree. Earl, Johnny A, and Buddy were all just as dominant in the peaks of their careers and were IMO stronger than Mika. Not to mention, the latter 2 were world class players not just in tourneys but also to gamble with. He's a great player, but he hasn't yet achieved greatness like the likes of the three I just mentioned. But like I said, that's just my opinion.

Alex is without a doubt the most naturally talented player of my generation. However he has little to no interest in competing these days. His achievements are non existent in recent years, and as such, should not be considered as a key player in today's game.

you have a point about him not having the interest in competing but I'm betting my left nut that he would play Mika for 10K tomorrow.

I'd like to see a double round-robin 10-ball tournament with these guys:

Yang Ching-Shun
Mika Immonen
Ralf Souquet
SVB
Johnny Archer
Wu Chia-Ching
Francisco Bustamante
Dennis Orcullo
Ronnie Alcano
Dennis Hatch
Corey Deuel
Thorsten Hohmann
Alex Pagulayan

I agree that his interest might not be the same as some of the other top players, but I think it is false to say he is not to be considered a key player in today's game. He did win the World Pool Masters last year, right before he beat Shane in a race to 100. Still seems like he can play a little.

no problem. I was just asking everyone's opinion on whether he would play them or not.

I've played Mika several times in the past year. I even came close to beating him once. Key word, close. If he isn't the best player out there. I don't want to meet up with the best player.

The only player that scares me, as much, is Dennis Hatch.

If I had to pick one player in the world it would be Yang.

This is the problem atm in the sport, the Taiwan contingent rarely ever plays against the rest of the world.

During the Guiness tour the Taiwan players had the edge on the other countries, including the Philipines, and as is well known Orcullo keeps losing to Yang for the cash.

Mika is probably the best "tournament" rotation player that regularily competes atm, and this includes alot of the Filipino players who had been playing in alot of the same events that Mika keeps wining or placing high in.

Is he as good as Yang, Wu, Chen? Who knows, sad we rarely ever get a chance to see those guys compete.

I think the key here is that Mika may be the Best tournament rotation player in the world right now hard to say hes not.
There is a handful of players i would bet on against mika in a long gambling set.

Speaking of Dennis: Why isn't he traveling around and doing more? Seems to me as dominant as he is, he could be doing much greater things with pool than winning the same tournament over and over and over and over and over....

He used to be a road dog and now he wants to play tournys i guess.

I prefer "road hustler" to "road dog"... LOL There have been alot of dogs on the road but not very many true hustlers. The Smooth Criminal- True Hustler..... Hey Bart, theres a title for the book! LOL
