hi i think its interesting to hear that the dcc is making new events
like straight pool and 3 cushion. and being played at the east hotel.
from what i can understand the straight pool is playing against yourself
with ball in hand to see who can run out more balls. if thats the case i cant
watch that. and i hope it doesnt mess up people that has matches in the west
like if im in the east watching chow yun fat play his 3 cushion pool well i just missed and forfeited my match at the west. im all for the DCC getting
bigger and better i just hope they will do it the right way. just make the prize funds bigger thats what people want rather than watering down the fund!
i usually have my hands full at the west hotel dont want to miss anything exciting because im at the east. so im staying at the WEST! HEY LETS GET 3 HOTELS GOING ON AND CALL IT THE DERBY 3 RING CIRCUS~

John - I see your point but I think it may be better & more room in the west if the other parties interested in the other games are in the east. More room for them & us in the west.
I also have the greatest respect for Greg's decisions as I feel he keeps the Derby Classic first & formost as far as quality & action. I personally don't intend to be over at the east except to just to check it out, Maybe.

Also, my understanding is that at least some and perhaps all of the money added for the 3cushion and straight pool is outside money -- not Diamond, so it isn't diluting the prize fund for the Banks-1P-9Ball or all around title at all.

I also hear that all of the 7' tables that were formerly upstairs at the West will now be across the street at the East, allowing for more 9' tables on the West side.

I'm not sure what the amateur event is that is planned for the East's small tables, but that is my only tiny little 'concern'. The DCC has always been pretty much wall to wall die hard action fans; I have a little concern that the league players might bring a different perspective, but who knows...

The Tuesday night Hall of Fame dinner has also been bumped to the East this year, to allow for more 9' tables in the West. However, like last year, they promise cooperation so nobody attending the banquet gets forfeited from their Tuesday night tourney matches. That worked out fine last year, and I'm sure it will again this year. The banquet is in a much bigger room this year, which is a very good thing.

Is Derby City putting too much on their plate?

Glad to see someone post this question!............ The answer may be yes, but time will tell shortley.... I know it's been quite a strain on the Diamond Team getting ready for all the events we are doing, as well as keeping our day to day business going,,, but we are growing very fast and slowing down and always "trying to improving" is just our way.................I'm most proud of the number of people stepping up giving ideas, time,, and like Bob Jewett even money to help do what the Derbt City is all about... POOL Entertainment!!!! .... I didn't try to create the Derby as a formatt for Profesional Pool.. ... I want the Derby to become like WOODSTOCK,,,,,,,
,,,instead let it be POOLSTOCK!!!!... I hope it will become a gathering place for all POOL PEOPLE........Where you can take your vacation and see people you haven't seen in years or perhaps you can now put a face with players who were only a name to you before..... And the best part is these people are up close and personal.......You even have a chance to play or stake CHAMPIONS....Past or future ones!!!.....I want very much to introduce other forms of cue sports......I'm most proud when I hear from a player telling me that the all round Title has enticed them into practicing a game that normally they wouldn't have and hearing that this has improved their whole pool game really gives me satisfaction......The hardest part for me is I realize it's difficult for top players to justify the conditions I'm putting them under..........Forcing them to attend a long event, play a short race, not knowing exact times when they play their matches and even though I'm adding as much money as the Tournament can justify with the gate and room pricing..I know its no nearly enough,,,especially with the IPT raising the ante its a great thing I must address!!!!!...I know it's going to take a corporate sponser to get the money up!...AND.....They want exposure!...Numbers of people!!!!!.....As well as TV....

The league players have provided much of the added money, thru coin drop. By being upstairs with only 22 tables they didn't have any place to grow. .. By moving them across the street it seems to make a few things better..... One is it allows for growth of the league market. Which happens to have the greatest potential for growth..... Before mostly only local league players played on the 7 ft. tables... In the furure we hope to get all leagues possibly expanding to the Fair Grounds located right next to both motels.. This extra revenue can be used partially to raise the added money to keep the Pros coming and entertaining the regular players and spectators,,,,up close and personal!!!!.......Secondly, this movement of 7 ft. tables allows more 9 ft'ers for action as well as tournament use for the first couple of rounds in all 3 regular DCC divisions....There should be around 16 or 17 extra 9 fts. including a new room called the Drink Water Room located between the bar and main restarunt,,..which I hope will provide improved times for matches and no excues that somone couldn't get a table to match up!

The reasons for 3 cushion and straight pool came from interner talk and my own personal beliefs... that in all cue sports..any shot you learn in any game makes you a better all rounded player.....I KNOW,THERE'S NOT TIME FOR YOU TO PLAY IN EVERYTHING!!!!.....YOU'RE GOING TO MISS SOMETHING,,,but if that's the worst thing that happens to you,, I can live with that!..................Greg/Diamond

Greg- It is the greatest pool show on earth. I only have 3 suggestions-all for the action room:

SmokeEaters SmokeEaters SmokeEaters

The Derby City Classic is already special but is evolving into something even more special.

Three cheers for all involved in making Derby City a celebration of pool and of all the games played over the green felt. This is Johnston City revisited, and only the most elite will hoist the trophies at the Derby City Classic.

What is the chances of someone like the Discovery channel shooting something on the tournament? They have Free lance people who do that kind of stuff. It has the making of a good independent documentary film. This is not pie-in-the-sky it could happen.

Without having ever been there, I can say without a doubt that you've already accomplished that. Derby's reputation proceed's itself. It's the place to go, year after year. I'm so excited to finally be going this year and getting to experience it first hand in person instead of through the stories of others.

LOL, I can certainly think of worse decisions to have to make!! :)

NOTICE: Some will be happy and others well? The 2006 DCC and all future DCC's will be non smoking everywhere except the Bar Area......This is a city wide ordinance and must be enforced by the Hotel or they can be fined or shutdown.....At least that takes the heat off me and my crew!!!....

This includes the hallways, vender areas, action room upstairs, drinkwater action room, main tournament room, ck in area, everywhere except the Bar Area where Action may take place.....It remains to be seen how well the hotel polices are enforced. They told me they would take care of it..........................Greg/Diamond

Kentucky as I rember was the Land where Tobacco is Grown, and you can’t Smoke. Sounds like Political correctness has found it way to Kentucky.:(

As for DCC putting too much on their plate? The post event comments by Fans, Spectators, Vendors, and Participants will be the True Measure of Success, or Failure of the 2006 DCC....

I'm sure it came as a great surprise to Greg to find this out at such a late date. I imagine that if he had known about the ordinance it would have been posted prior to this. I have no problem with this but I wonder how many players would have voiced their displeasure if this would have been common knowledge a couple of months ago?

A favorite politician of my lifetime hails from Kentucky's neighboring State of Tennessee, also a tobacco State. I believe Senator Fred Thompson, who used to be the chairman of the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee, would have made a GREAT President of the United States. Because of his affilliation with the bad-boy tobacco industry, which did contribute to his campaign, he did not pursue the Presidency. I do very much enjoy seeing him in his actor role on the hit TV show "Law and Order."

Only in America would you have an actor become President [Reagan] and a United States Senator become an actor! :D

Most events I attend today are non-smoking venues, and the majority of smokers I have spoken to do not mind smoking a cigarette in a designated smoking area or, in mose cases, outside.

It is interesting that Kentucky allows smoking in the bar areas. I do wish they had that rule up here in the below-FREEZING cold winters. :o

Smoking in bars is something that Louisville has done differently than the other smoke free Kentucky cities. Lexington went smoke free about a year earlier. Lexington lost a lot of revenue from the bars because of the ordinance. Louisville was smart enough to learn from Lexington's mistakes.

thanks for your reply to my question greg and no one more than me looks forward to the derby just after it finished last year thats all i can think about is i cant wait till next year. i was just kinda scared of it getting out of hand. but if you keep the pros coming you will have success no matter what. that draws the people but if they quit coming then you have the problem. i think they enjoy
not only the money but the gambling aspect as well it also is great practice for them kicking off the year. the gambling is what too keeps the crowds coming back. i think you know what makes the dcc a success greg and just please
as your biggest fan dont lose sight of that! thanks

Jam we must no forget Ronal Reagan was an Actor First, but also President of SAG (Screen Actor Guild), + Governor of California (the 6th Largest Economy in the World, if California was a Country), and last President of the U.S.

I think Senator Fred Thompson would have been an interesting Presidential Candidate. i think he might have won the Presidency.

As Bill Clinton won twice, and I think brought more baggage to his campaigns than any other Presidential Candidate.

Speaking of Bill Clinton, do you read Barbara Olson’s book. The Final Days"

Very interesting read, wonder if 1/2 of it is true???

The 7' table amateur tournaments aren't league affiliated. They're open. So, they should be something of the same vein as Valley Forge or Midwest Expos.

hi cornerman when you go to the dcc website it says info soon about the apa
tournament or something im a apa member thats why it caught my attention.
the only thing i would hate about a apa or league tourney is i love league play
but everybody knows that the sandbagging in leagues are way out of control.
i hope greg reads this! any handicapping tournaments would just give the money or trophy to some individual who is the best sandbagger!
like im a 6 in apa 7 is the highest. i know theres guys who are 4 shoot better than me. so in a handicapped tournament they would eat me alive!!
please if you do anything with apa greg please im begging dont let
race to handicapp the way! or its totally unfair.

As I say every year, "2 places I'll go for my vacation every year--- Derby City Classic and Vegas for the Valley tourney in May. Greg, this is without a doubt, the greatest tourney in the world. The All-Around Title speaks for itself and lets us see the best players in the world play 3 events. Plus the opportunity for some of us shortstops to play against them is a dream. Keep up the good work. We all appreciate all your efforts. Sam

Sorry, I could've been clearer. There are BCA league tournaments as well as an APA tournament. I was talking about the open tournaments on the 7' tables.

I don't think that Greg is doing anything for the APA apart from providing space and tables.
