Is this Cecil Tugwell?

I was scanning in some negative sent to me by Mike Haines and ran across this image. Mike thinks it might be Cecil Tugwell. What do you think? Mike didn't like the photo much from an artistic perspective, but I really like it!

I was excited, hoping that I would get to see Cecil shooting with his right hand... oh well.. that's Cecil. Cool picture!

I see Cecil almost everyday and that is him.

Tell him that I would be glad to order a print or two of that photo for him if he would like. I have been fiddling with it trying to make it into an "art shot." Here is one variation.

Playing right handed, he was as talented as Cliff Joyner. And could play all games. His left handed stroke was completely different and not nearly as smooth and fluid. But still quite accurate.

Another variatin on the Cecil photo - comments welcome

Jay, wonder why he would be shooting the money shot left handed? Here's another variation of the photo.

I like the grainyness, and lighting of the shot. Also His pose and concentration are very well captured........

This is not the best Tugwell

Bill, when you show them the other photo with the other cloth, chalk edited, cup edited with the brown boarder they will fall in love with the photo. it will be recognized as art-not just a pool photo.

This photo was taken after his "accident" in Detroit. It happened in the late 70's. He was no longer able to play with his right hand after that.

He lives in the Los Angeles area. He is the victim of drug abuse and no longer is any threat as a player.

How good did he play. Very, very good. Definitely one of the best black players in the 70's. And could play any game. Had a problem with his temper though, prone to get into scrapes, as he called them.

Mike, is this the version you like?

My friend Mike Haines likes a minimalist version, framed, and with an existential twist to the caption. As in.....

Anyone read that chapter on Keith and Cecil in Playing Off The Rail?
Fun read. I dunno how accurate but it sure would be a great movie sequence.
Matt Damon as Keith and Denzell Washington as Cecil. :-)

Will someone who really needs a laugh please read this post?

If you look back at the photo of Cecil I originally posted, you can see that there are several elements in the photo that got removed in later versions. For example, further down the thread you see a version where the overhead light, the bridge, and the jacket have been removed. As I worked on the photo, trying different approaches, I would email these edits to Mike Haines, who took the shot. Mike would email back with suggestions which became more and more insistent that the final version should be really minimalist. It finally got down to his insistence that I remove the piece of chalk and both of the cups on the little stand. I liked leaving one cup. Well, when I turned on my cell phone this morning, there was a message from Mike. I really want you to hear this message, so I created a little website with only two items; the photo (with one cup) and Mike's message to me. Please don't have him committed, I am sure it was tongue in cheek!:D

Here's the link to the site: http://bfanta0.tripod.com/onecup/

Sorry, but the link no longer works. We took down the page with Mike's recorded message. Wish you could hear it as it was a HOOT!
