so I got my first custom cue a few months ago and it was and still is georgeous.

but no matter what i do i keep reverting back to my joss. i gave the cue maker every last aspect of the my joss in attempt to replicate it but to no avail. i can never decide if i like the 314 and the standard shaft is far to whippy.
no offense to tony or darwin as they worked the ass off to make me happy and i am thrilled. but the hit is not for me. time to put this in a closet for a while.

time to start saving for a new custom

who hits like joss????
should i ask joss to make me a cue???

the search will be fun

As has been said ad nauseum, the hit of a cue is subjective to the individual. Cues do not "wear out". What's wrong with the Joss cue you play with, that you think you need a custom cue? Obviously you prefer the hit of your 'old' cue. The solution is to keep playing with it.

i just want a cue that is my own not a catalog cue but the hit and feels has to be there like i said if anything the search will be fun

Well, since the "feel" and "hit" are subjective to only you...and you can't tell without having played with the cue...good luck in having something 'built' that satisfies you. You're better off, imo, playing with lots of different cues that are already for sale, than trying to replicate a certain feel or hit.

Last I knew, Dan Janes will still make custom cues on request. I had one of his before Joss Cues Ltd. came into being. It was one of the best cues I've ever owned and regret selling it. And this was after both Bill Stroud and Tim Scruggs had left.

It could be that the new feels uncomfortable...if your material, joint, pin, shaft taper, ferrule, diamater, and tip are the same as your old Joss then the hit should be very close...if all else fails call Joss for a custom cue.

Are you comparing the 314-equipped custom to a Joss butt & shaft? If so, there is no way for you to find the "Joss feel" in that new cue.

who hits like joss????

Depends. Does your Joss have a stainless joint or it is a "hustler" model with the non-stainless joint? Huge difference in hit between the two, I owned a "hustler" and loved the hit and I hate the hit of the standard stainless steel jointed Joss.

Does your new custom have the same joint type? Most custom cue makers these days don't use stainless joints and if your Joss was stainless they are not likely to hit the same. I find you get a much harder hit with the stainless joints and I like a more dulled/soft feedback.

To get a proper answer to your question the people would need to know how "your" Joss hits. Does it have a predator shaft? Is it a standard Joss shaft? These are huge factors in how your Joss would hit. And then whoever tries to hit with your cue and gives you an answer would have to know a boatload of different custom cue makers and how their cues hit to give you knowledgable feedback. Truth be told I have hit with quite afew custom cues and I don't know of a single custom cue maker that makes a cue that hits like a stainless jointed Joss, and I know of none that have a hit that feels like a predator shaft.

hit

or you could have a local cue maker change tony's cue to a 5/16 14 stainless steel joint and use your joss shaft and problem solved.

Don't try to get a cuemaker to replicate the "feel" of your cue. Find a cuemaker that builds cues that have that specific "feel" already. The trick though is that it is very hard to find a place to hit with a wide variety of custom cue makers. At the BCA you have Joe Salazar selling lots of customs but I am pretty sure he would not be too keen on letting you try out every single one to find a hit you like, especially since the average cue he has is probably in the $2000 range. It is good you think the shopping around will be fun, because I am guessing it will be a slow process of trying out custom cues when you get the chance.

I can't figure out what your saying?? You have a Joss you love but want someone to make a cue just like your Joss??? That doesn't make sense....You already have what you want..Your Joss has the looks and hit you like...Why make one just like it...??

I thought he explained it really clearly in post #3.

I think any cuemaker is at a disadvantage anytime someone asks them to build a cue that hits like somebody else's cue. Hopefully you find a custom cuemaker whos work you like and play with his cue with his specs.

What not see what Dan Janes can do for you? I had him make me a custom to my specs last year and it is a really great playing cue, like nothing else I've found yet. Send Dan pictures of you cue with all the relevant specs, tell him exactly what you want and he will make it for you I'm sure.

I think you could probably wait till the billiard expo in PA in March and try a few cues down there to try and get the same hit. At that point, you have a cue maker and then tell them what you would like to have. Just a thought. I don't think Mass. would be too far of a drive to PA.

I was using a OB2 shaft on a Joss and upgraded the butt to a custom Jacoby. They feel very close. Both have the same pin and joint (plus both use the same shaft).

I think the easiest solution is to get a high end Joss though. If you enjoy how the Joss hits I don't think anyone can fault you for using one.

I played with a friend's Joss a few times that he was trying to sell. I loved it as soon as I held it. Get a pretty, high end Joss because that is what you want.

I would try changing tips. Figure out if your new cue hits too soft or too hard and replace the tip accordingly. Tips can really change how a cue feels.

Good luck.
